You might want to check in with Lanlubber. He is in NM. He is fighting cancer at the moment, he might enjoy some encouragement.

Severe Over-Land "Trail Rash", do you say; "oh no", or "who cares"?

Thanks, it takes a lot of work to keep a 37 year old vehicle looking nice. There is absolutely zero rust. The is probably less than 4 ounces of skim coat filler on it. I have over 700k on the clock. I have over 200k on the stroker. The interior looks as good as the exterior.

Relying on Paper Maps, Vehicle GPS, and Natural Instincts

The lat/ lon is listed down the sides of the Gazetteer maps so just get that from your phone and look it up on the paper maps. I carry a sextant with me for backup.

Relying on Paper Maps, Vehicle GPS, and Natural Instincts

GPS is cool but a lot of hassle getting the right maps and such. I have had mine crap out multiple times. I try to never go anywhere without GOOD paper maps. Not the best, but Delorme makes the Gazetter series of maps by state.

    Emergency 2 way communication

The problem in Colorado is that you are typically in a canyon or down low. The repeaters are rarely even close to line of site which is commonly around a half mile. If you can get to the top of a mountain, ham works pretty good but there are lots of areas with zero coverage. Terrain means...

    Emergency 2 way communication

Radio communications is sketchy at best in the mountains. More power rarely helps. The best bet is satellite. I love the gal that ran off the road and down a mountain in Rocky Mtn Park. She was there for several days. She tried to sue the park, saying it was a government responsibility and...

Not a bad view for lunch

I've been here working for two months. I am an aerospace engineer. I am just getting settled so I can go out. I ran a trail up to Crown King a couple of weeks ago from the south. It isn't the standard way and I did a 50 mile loop out through the desert. It was cool but I was by myself and...

I am new to the area and want to find all the best trails. Anybody have any tips, or want to tag along? I am hoping to head out tomorrow or Saturday July 18 for anything from one to three days. Like to take lots of pix and with the recent rains, hopefully the desert will be blooming.

    HAM interference with fog lights?

Put a cap right at the LED and a ferrite a couple of inches away towards the switch.
