Exploring Southern Oregon's Siskiyou National Forest, then continuing down the 101 through Redwood National Park. I'm planning several stops for short hikes and viewpoints. Will be following Overland Trail Guide's Wild Rivers Discovery Trail with a couple modifications.

Loaded question for sure. I would concede that a bar of soap can pick up gunk; but, it would still be completely safe to use.
Soap will assist in removing dirt, which is not really an issue. It's true strength lies in breaking up fat molecules. Even if "dirty" it will wash away both bacteria...
