What mileage did you purchase your rig?

Bought my truck new in Nov 2017 with 12 miles on it, now just over 60k miles. Around 15k of those are towing miles (5,000LB travel trailer or 4,500LB boat), around 5,000 of them related to overlanding, mostly interstate miles while carrying RTT and gear and a portion of them exploring the...

Test Kitchen rated a bunch of high end coolers

Sounds like @LostWoods and YETI had a nasty break-up. I hope there are no kids involved. Seriously though, YouTube requires sponsored content to be labeled as such. It's a policy. There's no way a large channel like ATK is going to get away with publishing videos with sponsored content that...

US Rocky Mountain Summer trip to WY/MT (Not Yellowstone) - Overland route and campsite suggestions

I might have modified it, originally we were going to go through WY with a stop in the Wind Rivers but my wife is doing that backpacking trip another time, so no WY on the route currently. The map/route linked in my first post is just the main roads and not actual camping stops, we'll be...

US Rocky Mountain Summer trip to WY/MT (Not Yellowstone) - Overland route and campsite suggestions

Alright, we're less than a month out from our departure date. I've got a reminder set to get online to try and get our timed-entry pass secured the day we're supposed to leave since that's the soonest I can try and get tickets. It's also looking like Missoula itself is going to be toasty but...

    RAM 1500 vs 2500, Payload / Features

As much as I love diesels (We own two of them, but they're "baby" diesels; 2.8 Duramax and 3.0 EcoDiesel), on the full-size HD trucks the fuel economy argument doesn't hold up as well anymore. The gas engines are becoming more efficient and the break-even point for a diesel is becoming longer...

    RAM 1500 vs 2500, Payload / Features

A 2500 with the Cummins won't have much more payload than a 1500 depending on trim and options. Max payload (again depending on options, etc) on the 1500 with a 5.7L is 1800LB. Max payload on a 2500 Cummins crew cab 4WD ranges from 1,880 to 2,300LB. A 3/4-ton diesel 4WD is going to get you a...

Question about Jackery 500 and solar panels

The Jackery 500 pictured has always been MPPT, the smaller 240 was originally PWM but has since been upgraded with an MPPT controller. The wonky looking Explorer 500 that I've only found one reference to from a review back in 2018 has who knows what, I'm not even sure that model made it into...

Question about Jackery 500 and solar panels

I would take the max solar input numbers there with a grain of salt, they don't match Jackery's specs at all. Some are close, but by and large the numbers are simply false. The 500 supports up to 100w, the 1000 supports up to 163w, and the 1500 actually supports up to 500w (2x 250w inputs) and...

    Question for long haulers

Well, how you plan on or want to wash your clothes is entirely up to you. We pack a week's worth of clothes as that provides a decent number of outfits without taking up a lot of space. For us, that's a week's worth for 3 people. For one person that could be 3 weeks of clothes. All just...

    Montana or Wyoming routes??

This section says "DO NOT POST HERE. Overland Bound approved routes. Moved here by Mods. " Should post in Overland Trip Planning instead.

    Question for long haulers

Yup, we also pack about a week's worth of clothes and then plan on stopping for lunch or dinner someplace near a laundromat once a week.

Where do you go when summer hits the Southeast

Head north! Not sure how far you're willing to drive, but the summer weather up in the Adirondacks is decent as well as the coast of Maine. Not sure what overlanding options there are, though, as when we were there last we stuck to pavement. Being in Illinois, it gets pretty gross here as...

    Dual band ham antenna recommendations

Don't forget that more gain means a flatter radiation pattern which is not good in hilly terrain, so sometimes it's good to have a couple of antenna options or one good general-purpose antenna.

My ham radio control head (seen off to the side in the first pic) and iPad (Mainly for passenger and to use Gaia GPS since there's no Android Auto support yet) at least, not sure what else I might mount up there but it's nice to have options.

Received the Expedition Essentials CPAM (Colorado/Canyon Powered Accessory Mount) yesterday and installed it in the evening. Haven't had a chance to mount anything yet, still waiting on the rest of the Ram parts to arrive.

What kind of overlanding do you do?

We do all kinds of overlanding, from weekend trips that don't involve much off-pavement to trips that last for 1-2 weeks and thousands of miles. We go with a rough plan of where we'd like to end up and then figure out where we're going to camp when we get there. The goal being to get out into...
