Recently, I was downloading some maps onto the phone at home (WiFi + fast internet service): EXTREMELY SLOW map downloads at any time of the day or night. If it was free, it'd be OK. But it's not free, and this slow download s**t is going to lose them a lot of paying customers if it continues.
There is not much point knowing the exact grade or tilt of a road unless you know it ahead of time (before you drive on it) AND know the tilt limits of your vehicle as currently loaded. However, it's interesting to know how tilted your vehicle got after passing through . I have a Lev-O-Guage...
I like to have cellular data, mainly for entertainment purposes but also I get jobs through email and texts. I've got an inReach for the really remote places. I make a note of places that have cell service but are pleasantly remote.
I use this type of nozzle on jerry cans. I use the plastic part shown at bottom to add approx. 20" of fuel hose, which, when filling, is pushed down into the vehicle's filler hole. Never spilled or even dripped, except once when I didn't hold the jerry can correctly and it blurped some gas out...
I've noticed that ATVers seem to be reluctant to get off/out of their machines and walk. I've seen them at state park campgrounds jumping on the ATV so they could ride it up to the soft drink vending machine at the campground HQ building.
I'm not surprised that being told turn here, turn there is inferior to visualizing the route (using a map) ahead of time.
For my job, here in the gigantic Los Angeles meglopolis, I travel to different locations almost every day. I find turn-by-turn navigation, whether online Google or the old...
I bought a Renogy 100W "solar suitcase" a few months ago. Regrettably, I haven't had the chance to use it for the fridge battery top off purpose I intended it for, but I've used it to top off my vehicle's battery. The vehicle itself will charge the Odyssey 34R AGM battery only to about 80% of...
If there is a cold snap, it can be cold plus windy. You have to watch the forecast. Interestingly, if rain is forecast it can be relatively warm. Winter rain in the Mojave is usually brief and rarely heavy. Very pleasant, actually.
I've used a dashboard mounted iPhone Xr (running Gaia) plus a Garmin Montana 700i side-by-side in the backcountry. Each shows me to be at what appears to be the exact same place on the maps. Except one time...the iPhone/Gaia had what probably a software glitch/failure for about 18 hours...
I've seen what the idiots do...or the evidence that remains after they've gone home....and have subsequently experienced the closed roads/trails. Without more hard enforcement, I don't see it getting better. IMO, the 'educate them and they'll change' approach is too slow.
Personally, I'd get a roof rack. If a nice $1000 BajaRack isn't in the budget, look at the offerings from Yakima, Thule, and the Amazon-sold "knockoffs". Spare tire/Gas can be carried on such a roof rack. They make spare tire mounts to add to the rack, but you can also figure out how to do it...
The "HDX Totes" are junk compared to the 'real' ones : Gray Akro-Mils® Attached Lid Container - 21-1/2" L x 15" W x 9" Hgt. OD | U.S. Plastic Corp.
That Amazon one looks closer to the good ones. I examined the Apache cases at HF. They are very good for the price, but with frequent use, the...
Bought: a 100W solar "suitcase" for keeping the house battery (fridge) charged while camping.
Plan to get: A smaller, lighter, maybe 50W solar panel to use to top off the vehicle battery at home while my HKB voiltage controller from OZ sits at the USPS LAX facility for 4 months and counting...
I suggest going up Wyman Canyon (east side) and going down Silver Canyon. Silver is steep...more fun (IMO) to descend. Grandview (≈8600')is the official campground. Dispersed camping is available anywhere that isn't part of the official Bristlecone grove boundaries. I've seen ground tents...
For camping using the '97 4Runner (a smallish vehicle) the Scepter 10L MWCs are my preference. I like their size and weight when filled. Also, if the vehicle crashes into a ditch or rolls over in a remote, waterless area, the Scepters will likely survive. The thin-walled consumer cans seem...
I keep a lot of maps through Gaia on my phone (small tablet would be better for the dashboard mounted part of the adventure), and keep a Garmin Montana 700 series unit with it's own sets of multiple maps....' just in case Gaia poops out or something'. BTW, I've been using Gaia when it pooped...
