    Into the desert, overland camping.

"Has anyone camped in the desert by yourself?" Why yes, many times. But not in this particular area. It looks nice, thanks for the look. BTW, what town or city might I be seeing in the background of this shot from your vid?

    Which App is best?

Gaia. Looked all the others, decided I liked the choice of maps and sometimes having multiple maps of the same area. Reason: All maps contain errors; either errors made at it's creation or errors that have "aged in" due to changes on the ground since the map was made). A lot of times I'm on a...

    New Navigation Device iPad?

cug, why would you be taking Gaia into the backcountry, but still be depending on cellular service?. I thought that the whole point is to be independent of cell service. Maybe I'm missing something? Does anyone here think that he new "refreshed" Gaia interface (on iOS tablet/phone) is a step...

    Primitive camping

Unfortunately, there is a relative scarcity of public land east of the Rockies. Out west, the BLM, National Forests, some National Park Service units and many of the National Wildlife Refuges generally offer what they call 'Dispersed Camping'...basically anywhere you want within reason and...

    Grand Staircase & Bears Ears.

Smoky Mtn NP gets 55 to85 inches of rain per year. Canyonlands gets 9.5 inches. Desert areas, like most of southern Utah, can need centuries to recover the plant life/ecosytsem that's erased by clowns with motors going off the road. There'd be no support for closures ...excepting the crazed...

Satellite Messengers: Garmin InReach vs Spot for Non-emergency Offroad Recoveries

I have one of these and do not regret acquiring it. Easy messaging and an accurate GPSr . Having an integrated keyboard is nice.

    Joined the Bandwagon

I have a smaller vehicle-1997 4Runner. I sometimes sleep on the floor of the cargo area, with nice pad between me and the carpeted floor. Of course, I have to empty 1/2 of the cargo to make a spot for 1 person. The other half holds the heavy battery and Engel fridge. The idea of raising the...

Why are torsion bars so vilified? And were Land Cruisers ever designed for recreational off-roading?

I had a '91 Toyota 4WD truck that had torsion bars. At 22 years old, when I sold it, they still hadn't sagged. The Land Cruiser 70 series is designed to be reliable transportation anywhere in the world as it comes from the factory. They have solid front axles for clearance and durability...

Satellite Messengers: Garmin InReach vs Spot for Non-emergency Offroad Recoveries

I have an inReach unit, but I've only tested it since I've not actually needed it for getting stuck or other "emergency". According to Garmin, when you push SOS on an inReach, you then have a text conversation with an operator at their call center. During this conversation you can relate that...

What's the deal with repair parts these days???

Toyota still has most (but not all) of the parts for my 1997 4Runner. In cases where Toyota USA no longer stocks the part, (headlight assy for 99-2002 4Runner) I've bought from Japan and the UAE. The downside is the pricing from Toyota USA. I don't know how the USA domestics are on parts...

Battery choices for GX470 North Idaho

AGM batteries have been victims of our recent inflation. The Northstar 27F I bought in September of 2020 for about $330 is now (in its current Odyssey branding) $467.

Securing a fridge in a truck bed without drilling holes?

This is the correct answer. Neither people or your other cargo will notice the little cutouts in the mat.

    New Navigation Device iPad?

I am pleased with the use of a dash-mounted iPad mini 6 (wifi+cellular) with the Gaiagps app. I use a small vehicle (1997 4Runner) so I figured that the full size iPad would be too unwieldy for the small available area on the dash. The size of the mini 6 means you might be doing a bit of zooming...

Interesting conversation with Forest Service Ranger

The abandoners should at least leave a note that says "free!", like folks in the city do when they place furniture on the sidewalk.

My experience with Overlanding vs Off-Roading: Is the barrier to entry for Overlanding LOWER?

It's the difference between using a vehicle for entertainment and using a vehicle for transportation. I like to spend some time in remote places, and need at least a light-duty 4WD vehicle to get to these places. If I had Musk Money, I'd hire a helicopter to fly me and the camping gear in and...

    Are refrigerator/freezer covers worth it?

I bought my Engel MT45 naked, took it home, and then realized I'd have less scarring and dents on the sheet metal if I had the cover, and then went back and got one. I have no idea how much the thermal in insulation might help.
