Build/overland/4x4 stuff: 1989 Raider, 2010 Sequoia, and other projects

Really enjoying your build on the Raider. Reminds me of my 01 LR Discovery build. Made just about everything myself. My build...had an old red car too...if you find yourself bored. https://landroverforums.com/forum/build-threads-43/2001-dll-mild-ambitious-build-81853/

Did Top Gear/Grand Tour Inspire a Generation of Overlanders?

Grew up long before these guys were doing what they were doing. Mutual of Omaha and Camel Trophy events, reading Hemingways accounts of Africa, and family cross country trips sparked the desire to travel overland.

Story done on my 2013 Dream Machine Tacoma!

Your rig turned out nice! Had a 82 (bought new) and 85 (used). Neither one faired well in Michigan...boxes rusted away and transmissons issues with both, fifth gear failures and front imput clutch shaft bearings. Still the best thing around with solid axles on a small truck.

    New to overlanding not off-roading

Google 'Roamingreckless'. She overlanded with a subi outback for a few years. Welcome to the forum.

    How would you start over?

This is my second overland build. So, starting over already happen. My current rig suits me just fine, travel solo 99% of the time (in this rig). Have a RTT for those times when my wife is along or grandsons. It's work in progress always, an evolutionary process of...what works/needed, what...

    How would you start over?

My nephew had an immaculate late 70's Cherokee. Original midnight blue paint, 401 V8 with factory A/C, low-miles, camel color interior. It was just an awesome rig. Unfortunately, he had to sell it after buying his second house. Thought long and hard about buying it myself...but...when you...

    How would you start over?

Sounds like you've learned a lot! And have 'it' figured out. Your rock-crawling comment cracked me up...same here. Have duel battery set-up, also, and it is recharged by alternator. Problem l ran into, was being parked for more than a day. Had to drive everyday, whether l was leaving an...

Advice on first Mtn West Family Advenutre

My parents took us west in 1965...and six of us slept in a...Apache Eagle pop-up. Coleman cooler and stove. 65 Chevy station wagon, no A/C. Best four weeks ever! When l took my kids, three, south in 93, basically same set up, but a little bit larger pop-up. If l was doing the same trips...

Thank you! Very nice build. We've got a 21 Colorado, four door, and have been looking at going this direction.

    Overland "Types?"

Actually, this is what l enjoy about 'overlanding'. Stopping when l've done enough driving or staying as long as l like, if a spot/area suits me...no agenda. Drove my wife crazy, while l was traveling solo to Alaska. She wanted to know where l was going to be each day, trip charted out weeks...

I'm in over my head! Nebraska to Dead Horse Ak.

Have you thought about going up the Dempters hwy. to Tuktoyaktok, instead of doing the Dalton? Did the Dalton to Arctic circle, which was awesome. But, l believe you have to pay to get to Arctic ocean in Prudhoe bay, since the oil company owns the land at the end of the road. They have a new...

I'm in over my head! Nebraska to Dead Horse Ak.

This was pretty much my route going out, once l got into ND. Came across US2 from Michigan, hooked a right at Rugby ND. Coming back, the original plan was to hit Jasper...but it was toast by then. So, went a little east of that route, turning south at Saskatoon, then down through Moosejaw and...

2025 return to Alaska, family trip possibly upcoming on Rally Point

Surely would like to do another Alaska trip, but just to soon. And already have plans for the upcoming year. Good luck, and have a safe trip!

    Overland "Types?"

The only common denominator that I've found...is no matter who they were or who they wanted to be or what they did or didn't do or how deep their pockets were or weren't...they all had a sense of wander. Wanting to see what's around the next bend, or over the next hill, or hiking a little...

    Good beginner trails in Michigan

That is on a "cool level" like no other! Was fortunate enough to visit the museum in Grayling before they moved it to Florida. It's a shame it left Michigan...it belongs here.

    Good beginner trails in Michigan

Haven't watched a football game in ten years, pro or college, best decision l've ever made...when l think back of all the Sat. and Sundays wasted. Had no idea we were playing for national title, and just heard the other day the Loins were doing well. I'm happy for them...but could literally...

Pots and pans (and kettle?) - nesting, compact, not crazy expensive

Army surplus...nesting aluminum pots, mess-kit, stackable utensils, small uluminum coffee pot. Two nesting fry pans, with handles cut down. Lay a paper plate between them to eliminate rattling. Coleman doesn't take up much room, and well worth the space given up...when two burners are in...

Are there no female users here?

It's odd that there's not more females here. On my journey to Alaska, from Michigan, several times women out number me at campgrounds, or camping at roadside rest areas. In Valdez, probably 10 to 1. At first l thought they may be traveling together, but they all pulled out at different times...
