This is a great book for orienteering: It looks like it didn't like my Amazon link. The book is "Be Expert with Map and Compass: The Complete Orienteering Handbook". It used to come with tools for practicing in your home. I don't know if it still does.

I have a GE stove with a glass top and use cast iron all the time. Unless you drop the pan on the glass I don't know if you need to worry about it too much.
