I use my Kenwood TM-V71A to talk on Ham and listen to GMRS frequencies. I recently got a second unit to use as a home base / second car.

When I create a log I like to put a section for Comments or Notes. So in your case I might put something about the surroundings or environment, e.g. cub bears spotted or good fishing spot or no open area for fire pit, etc.

At least you got it on. Great place to put a panel though.

I use a Yakima rack which clamps to naked roof. No drilling.

Added a wireless front facing camera. Just trying it out and see how it goes. Good thing about having an old truck, I care less about scratches, holes, dents etc.

That's a long stretch without visibility of your caravan. I agree it does seem spotty. Not sure how to overcome that, e.g. more beaconing, better positioning of comms, etc.

I have Yakima and Thule cargo boxes that have plenty of room for sleeping gear. The rifle box I have up there now is only good for gear.
