    Our van build

I just got them on eBay. I was able to find the complete set-up, used, for all four windows (back and side doors). Don't drive with the backs open! You'll get gassed out, and dust will just roll in. Here is a how-to link from the sportsmobile forum...

    Our van build

Just to prove we get out of the driveway once in a while, here's a camping picture before we got the top done.

    Our van build

Just got back from Fiberine, new 20" aero top installed! The drive to/around/back from LA was miserable, but the folks at Fiberine really took care of us. Top notch installation, no leaks, trim around the cut out metal (so I don't split my clumsy head open), max air fan installed, and got it...

Finally got out in the van

We did! We were up by where we met up, but farther East of the highway. Got to play with Gaia a little, fished a bit, and wandered around some old forest service trails. Nice break from town and work...

Finally got out in the van

More camping than overlanding, but we did get out for a few days on the North Fork of the Boise river. We got the chance to evaluate our planned build, and see what we're missing/what we don't actually need. One disappointing note was the amount of trash we picked up around the camp and on...

Any radio wave propagation gurus on hand?

Thanks! I was thinking it worked like that, but I really don't understand the theory.

Any radio wave propagation gurus on hand?

Got a question about antenna ground planes. We are adding a fiberglass high top to a van. We will also have a rack that mounts to the drip rails. When they cut out the steel roof for the high top, we are leaving about two feet of the original roof intact in front (over the driver/passenger...

No worries! We're pretty stoked about this project.

    Our van build

The front suspension brackets are tricky. All the conversion companies pretty much make their own brackets. The conversion I'm doing uses coil springs and a late model coil spring front axle/swing arms. Done incorrectly, death wobble will cause you grief, so I'm going with someone who already...

    Our van build

More work! Dealt with the rusty bumper and some electrical projects. Installed a Redarc brake controller and a pair of KC lights I had on hand, and changed out the headlights and tail lights with halogens.

    Hello from Utah

Utah is a beautiful place. We spent a couple weeks there and in Arizona last year. Really enjoyed hwy 12.

Found the right thing in U.K., how do I get it in U.S.?

No, I stopped when I looked up the folding faucet (not included) that goes with this. The listing for the faucet says it won't ship outside the U.K. But, like I said, My wife found a place that will ship to the U.S., 320 bucks delivered. I do appreciate the effort folks put into looking for a...

    Overland Trash Systems

I use an old medium alice on my Side by side (free, leftover stuff) and I'll probably just use an old duffle bag (again, free, leftover gear) for the van.

Horror Stories and getting in over your head on the Trail.

Years ago in southern Missouri I made two critical mistakes: I didn't pay attention to the weather, and I got into a low, tight spot in the rain. Got caught in a flash flood. Scratch one pickup, and my buddy almost drowned. I still don't know how I got him out, I'm a pretty lousy swimmer. Panic...

What changes to your rig did you like the least?

They said it was too tricky getting the holes in the right place. If a guy tells me he can't do the job correctly, I believe him!:grinning:

    Dogs with motion sickness?

Our old Lab gets so excited when he sees we're going for a ride he makes himself sick. Then if the road is twitchy, he gets sick again. Dramamine works for him. We give him one before we start loading up (before he starts dorking out), and he's fine.

Recovery Board Color: What are your preferred Color Choices?

I bought some short knock-offs for our Honda side by side, blue was the cheapest color. Probably go with Maxsa's for the van. Since we want to paint the van a tan color, I'll probably get tan boards.

What changes to your rig did you like the least?

Wow, I would have thought this thread would be hoppin'! In our previous set-up (F250) we bought a camper shell without a roof rack. Instantly regretted that decision, and wound up sending it back to Snugtop to get the rack rails installed (local dealer wouldn't touch the job).

    Our van build

An explanation of what we've done so far: Bringing the van home from Idaho Falls (about 300 miles) the road noise was deafening. I checked it with a db app on my phone after I got home, and got an average of 91 db at 55mph, with peaks of 101 db. This will not do. Got on Amazon and bought a...
