    Full Size vs Mid Size

Not missing a thing! Now think of all the JKs you’ve seen kitted out for Overland adventure with bumpers, two spare tires, an RTT and awning, maybe a water system, and a full suite of skid plates and sliders, and know that they sometimes have payloads as low as 850-900 lbs....Most of them are...

    Full Size vs Mid Size

Good question, and a common one as I had that same question myself a while back. The short answer that I found is that there is no legal way to increase the payload of a vehicle in North America. The payload figures are set by the manufacturer and are the “on record” truth for the life of that...

    Full Size vs Mid Size

The only disadvantage of a full size that I can see is on the off road side, and it's minor in North America. The in-town nimbleness might be an issue where you live but the level of the issue is as you said — parking is a bit more of a pain in a couple of places but otherwise it’s fine. You...

    Full Size vs Mid Size

I love having the dogs in the cab too — ours aren’t service animals so the “need” isn’t as explicit, but at the end of the day it’s the people who join you on the adventures that matter most, both two and four legged. It sounds like you might be better served by the PW for your application —...

    Full Size vs Mid Size

A diesel for high mileage makes sense. There’s a real buzz when a gasser gets half a million miles on the Odo, and it makes national news when it hits one million, while some diesel owners see those articles and say “I remember when my odometer on this rig rolled over the million mark 15 years...

    Full Size vs Mid Size

You and I were typing at the same time! Looks like you already have a list of some of your considerations. I would be interested to hear what you think is the most important thing for your needs out of that list of 6 things, and what you think is the least important thing?

    Full Size vs Mid Size

I went through this same process a while back — I was an avid Jeep guy, but needed more capacity. In reality I actually now own both a full size and a mid-size, both GM products, and I’ve used both for overlanding. Personally I prefer the midsize, but it 100% depends on the kinds of trips you...

    Dice Roll Challenge 2019

Hello OB, My wife and I only occasionally post videos of our trips. I enjoy the process of filming and editing as a hobby and so to bring our hobbies together we like to do video trip reports. Mostly, this gives us something to show our kids in the future — a bit of a “life before them”...

Finding a balance between camping and driving.

Good point that I didn’t address — the route your journey takes you through will have a huge impact on how detailed your plan needs to be. While you can use time (as you have, which is great) or distance to determine your driving time, in the North with one vehicle it’s very easy to hit that...

Finding a balance between camping and driving.

We do mainly two "types" of trip and that determines the way we balance camping and driving. The first type is a more traditional "overland" trip, where we just go for a bit of an exploration around a place. For those, we stop when we feel like it and let the trip decide for us. Some days are...

    Adventure / Overland motorcycles

The Plastidip looks really good! I thought you got a new bike there for a moment between photos. The Kawasaki Green sure does stick out and it’s quite a unique thing on a rig like that, and I think it works! Great job and great photos.

    Need help with motor diagnosis.

Very interesting. Now, this may seem like a dumb suggestion, but some older vehicles had a secondary purpose for a light -- for instance, a solid light means one thing, a blinking light means something totally different. Have you checked to see if the seatbelt light is meant to do that flash on...

    Need help with motor diagnosis.

Is the flashing lights steady, like a programmed warning? Or are they intermittently flickering, as if they are getting inconsistent power/signals? Any chance of contamination in the fuel? How many tanks have you run through since the problems first started? I can't speak to all the symptoms...

    2018 GMC Canyon MTB/Overland/Adventure Rig

That looks great. An approachable and tastefully executed mod, low cost, with a huge benefit to your approach angle. That's a win if ever I saw one! Nice work!

    Now I'm all messed up..

I have seen a few of the full size threads discussing the idea of someone with a Tacoma wanting to go Full Size because the Tacoma doesn't meet their needs. I would make a small suggestion before anyone in this position -- with a Taco, lusting after a full size -- pulls the trigger. My...

    Ladder help

I think I had the same thought as @Munga Brown . Would these work for your application: Gobi also make a ladder but it's rack-specific; it's designed to work with the Stealth and Ranger racks, and allows the operation of the hard top window and door...

Pachyderm, or "Pac", a 2017 GMC Canyon

Had a great little adventure in Pac this weekend. We have been hesitant to really thrash it off road until we get bumpers as the approach angle isn’t the best on Pac as he currently sits. However, the best option for our preferences would be the ARB bumper, but with it weighing in at 185 lbs...

Need idea help for arb awning mount

I am not sure if this will be helpful, but we use heavy duty L-shaped brackets in a bit of a different way than USStrongMan (clean install btw!). They are commonly available at Canadian Tire. We attach them to the tubular bars using u-bolts. A few minutes with a hacksaw, a file, and some spray...

Convince me I should keep lugging around my hi-lift

We carried one for years but never needed it. However, while your question is focused on the tool I would encourage you to consider the function. What does a hi-lift do? - It lifts things up. - It can pull things (albeit not super well). Both of the above functions can also be served by, for...

    Newbie here

Welcome Terrance. We had a 2011 2-door Wrangler for a year before trading it for a 4 door Rubicon, and put quite a few hundred thousand overland kilometres on the platform. Either rig is excellent for off-road adventure. Welcome aboard and I'm sure you will find a lot of resources and ideas on OB.
