Steve, yes, spot on. The ARB is way more than $300 here in the UK, though and if you import yourself you're paying heavy shipping and tax. The other thing that made me go this route was size. I wanted one that extended 3.5m out from the Jeep so I could put up a 2-3 man tent under it and I also...
Just a heads-up: I just purchased one of these to go on my little expedition trailer. It's the exact dimensions I need (46" x 60") but I believe they sell other dimension nets, too. It looks good quality and for $28 bucks it's a steal compared to most...
Robert, I got to hear about them from Teraflex when I installed one of their short arm kits with track bar on my JK. The Elkas were their go to shock so I thought I'd get them installed at the same time. The difference in ride on and off road is amazing. If need be I can throw the Jeep into...
Jason, yes, that was one of my first mods, too. I also made a beach cutting board for mine. They're handy things, for sure!

No worries, Steve. Yes, it's well reviewed and popular here in the UK. There's a newer version out now but you can probably still find this version online.
This project was to make expedition set-up for the rear of the my 2 door Jeep Wrangler JK. I bought as couple of ex-MOD flight containers and restored and modded them. I made a lightweight top that effective binds the two and allows for a second tier of storage above them. I used aluminium...
I've done a few DIY designs and mods over the years so thought I'd post the ones I've found most useful here.
I'd wanted an awning for some time but most manufactured ones were incredibly expensive and fairly heavy. Here's an article I wrote with loads of pics of how I made one to the exact...
Yeah, I wanted to put on a new axle and the same wheels as the Jeep but with this budget it was never going to happen. That said, I may well get round to that next year. I have a few ideas I'd like to do but I promised the wife $500 and a week of evenings to build this one so that's what...
Cheers Robert!! Yes, I did think about that. My plan is if we're off-road in rough terrain or deep mud etc.. I'll just take it off and pop it in the trailer or on the rack. Very few of our trips will take us into that kind of terrain, though, so for the most part it should work fine. I'd...
For shocks, take a look at the Elka adjustable gas shocks. Not cheap but VERY good. I have them on my JK and I can set them for whatever kind of ride I need.
As long as you get a good quality one and mount it in a protected position so you don't kill it on the trail they're very useful indeed. I wouldn't mind having another on the front. Then again, I'm a pilot and I like my gadgets!
Here's the water tank installed:
The bracket allows the front to drop down and the tank slides out but the trailer can also be tipped backwards which allows the tank to be 3/4 filled without removal.
Just spent Easter building this and I'm pleased with the result. I set a very small budget of $500 as this is not something I'll use daily but it's already done a couple of trips and it's been brilliant to have along. I blogged the build here...
I've used this one for a few years now:
It's proved to be a very good bit of kit and wasn't particularly expensive at around $100. It's a T Max Double Pump Portable Air Compressor. Pumps up my 33s without any probs and stores away easily as it's fairly compact.
I've installed a set of sensors in the bumper of my Wrangler JK. They're darn useful, especially if you have a hook on the back. The only downside is when I get in my wife's car and forget she doesn't have any...
Another useful tool I've installed is a good quality reversing camera. Invaluable...
