I had a spot gen 1, then 2, then 3 and was happy with them all but about a year ago went with an InReach Mini, so I understand what you said. In my above post, just wanted to point out another option.
Add me to the ALPS fan club. Have had a large one for a while, it's rock solid, got a smaller one more recently and have been very happy with it. They aren't too expensive either, which is always a plus.
I've driven out to Utah over a couple dozen times and every trip I see something different. I guess what I'm saying is relax, take your time, don't try to see it "all" cause you can't. Just pick a section of the state and hang out there, if you try to see too much you'll spend all your time...
While I agree with what RoarinRow wrote, another option if you don't want a subscription is a PLB, which is basically just a distress option. I carry and inReach for use in non-emergency AND emergency situations and don't mind the subscription costs, but just wanted to toss out another option.
