I did it in July and the weather was great, but some of the campsites are pretty high and the nights were cold even then. The FB group has a recent post of someone who did part of one section (Medano pass) this past weekend and he said snow obscured the road. Basically, several of the spots in...
I carry a hand held CB for group events just in case, but it seems most of the groups I'm around now use GMRS which it the one I mounted in my vehicle. I also have a hand held ham radio and my tech license. I get your point, it all depends but if I had to pick one for group rides, it would be...
It's listed as day use area only in the National Park in November. Of course, there's a lot more to the north rim than just the park but if it's too snowy to keep the main paved road open, what will the backcountry be like? I would strongly recommend the south rim in winter or the North Rim...
I'll just toss this out there for your consideration, the North Rim National Park facilities all close October 15th in preparation for snow. Weather is always fickle, so you never know...but you never know.
I'm planning on boondocking at Vogel Canyon Picnic Area. I know is says picnic area in the title but if you go to the grasslands web page it says it allows camping. Its about 20 minutes south of where we meet up Saturday. if it's full (it does say heavy use) there's plenty of other places in the...
I'm coming up from Oklahoma, but right now I'm planning on dispersed camping the grasslands Friday night and probably somewhere back in Oklahoma Saturday night.
Be sure to post up in here: Oklahoma overlanders where ya at?
FYI, I'm in Guthrie, but tend to head to New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona or Utah for trips more so than Oklahoma.
You can download the gpx files for the ERT section 5, which covers basically this route plus a lot more.

Meh, they don't eat much :grinning: Seriously though, Florida definitely gives Oklahoma a run for its money when it comes to the creepy crawlers, lol. Pythons, Alligators, and more, I'll take a few friendly, fuzzy spiders any day...now it's the snakes you really have to look out for, we have...
I've done that trip with Bob, you'll enjoy it. There are good trips to the Grand Canyon and there are Great Trips to the Grand Canyon, but I don't think there is such a thing as a bad trip to the GC. PS, this is my truck after the rain on that trip.
Went there for a week in December 2019, I would agree with what you posted. Only thing I would add is that for any future trips I plan on booking a different site for every night, it is spread out so you don't want to camp in the same place the whole trip. Two nights at most in the same spot...
What is the reason someone would choose this unit over a Garmin In-Reach? Not trying to be jerk, sincerely asking. I am very happy with my InReach Mini, and it's from an established player being from Garmin, so what bells and whistles make this a better product?
Yeah, the only approved camping is the campground (Doris) and backpacking by permit in the Charon Gardens (west edge). Also, you're not allowed to drive off a road across the grass, not allowed to have a dog off-leash and not allowed to have a fire. Not trying to be a nag, as you've already...
