The other area that I have been working on is the electrical. My original set-up had a solar panel on the roof and the rest of the system including the battery in the spare tire well. I did not like this for several reasons.
1. the tire on the roof was hard to get to, exposed to to UV rays...
The next thing I changed was the rear door. Right now I have only done one, I may do the other also. The rear doors have a large unused space in them, I wanted to use it. I removed the door panel, cut out the sheet metal and built in some shelves. I think of this as my spice rack. I can put...
As I said, I have made a bunch of changes to the truck in the last few months, but have not posted them here due to time. Well, looks like I have some time due to our current crisis. I can't fly, so working at home.
Right now anything build out of wood is in a Beta testing form. Once I have...
Yes, I need to update this. I built a platform for sleeping, cut out one rear door and made a fold down table with storage. Pulled off the solar and now have a dual battery system charge by the alternator and a new electrical panel with switches in the overhead console. I will try to update with...
Yes I am, and it is stock. It is a 3/4 ton so it is stout and sits a little higher than a 1/2 ton. It also has full skids and a G80 locker factory. But yes, all stock.
I think nearly any 4x4 can do it, just not a newer AWD “Crossover “. As long as it is truck based, it will be fine.
I think the most challenging area is section 2. I was just through there twice this last summer/fall. It is rutted and can be a little muddy due to all the shade. However I went through it all in 2wd. I live just a few miles from Bethel Ridge and so I know what it looks like.
If the trailer is all that is stopping you, just come. If needed I can yank the trailer behind my Suburban, won’t even feel it. I can hook up for the tricky spots and you do the rest.
Well I am driving an older solid axle Suburban, so not too fast. I will also have my wife with me, she has the same issues. I’m sure if we need to, we can split into a slower and fast group to keep everyone happy.
Expect non-stop rain as soon as you cross over the Cascades into the Puget Sound area. East of there you will mostly see sunshine.
Bring rain gear and plan for it to be very wet. It could rain every day you are in the Seattle area. Other than that there is a ton of cool stuff to see. Be sure to...
Western Montana, Idaho and Washington are all wonderful with a ton of places to stop. The problem is that there are so many nice places, you would need 3 months to see them all.
I really love the section from Western Montana through the mountains to Spokane Wa. After Spokane it is fairly flat...
So, I am in. I have also done this on 2 wheels, but with a buddy. I get to do it again, only this time with my wife. BTW, section 2 is only a few miles from my house. At one point we exit out onto Wenas Rd. and that is where I live.
Thanks, you are right. However my reason for not wanting a Subaru has more to do with the fact that it just would not be the kind of off road vehicle I would want it to be without a lot of mods, by that point it would get the same gas mileage as the Xterra and wear out parts faster.
The Xterra...
Put a good set of tires on the Pathfinder and learn to drive it well, and you will go to amazing places. Get good recovery gear too. After a while, if you find that you need more out of it, either buy a 4x4 or add a locking rear diff. Or even a winch.
I have a 90 Suburban and I have explored...
So, I am rarely ever the analytical type when it comes to vehicles, I have been more passion driven in the past. But, as I get older I am starting to look at things a bit different.
Running the numbers has got me to do some rethinking.
A "Newer" 4Runner is just not going to happen. Anything...
