I went with a new vehicle and use a shop for the critical work, for the same reasons you mentioned.
I bought and upgraded my truck as a present to myself for my 40th. There was a lifetime of dreaming before that...

I replaced the LT reflector housings with projector housings from a Silverado High Country
It's a pretty easy job, under an hour, if you watch a few YouTube videos first. There are a few tricky and hidden fasteners.

The headlamps I have there were installed after I had the truck lifted, so they are not aligned properly. So I think they're projecting the light out a bit far, and not lighting the road up well as they could be.
That said, the lights are quite bright, and still a dramatic improvement over...
I placed mine on the front fenders just in front of the A pillar.

It took a lot of digging, phone calls and research, but I managed to figure out how to change my 4" kit into a 6" Stage 2 kit with coilovers and adjustable rear shocks; without buying a new kit.
It's been about a month since I ordered the parts, but got the call today that everything arrived...
I had nearly forgotten about this, but about 15 or so years ago I had paid to have the boost increased on he turbo in a VW I had. Some time later, the turbo exploded lmao.
Fun while it lasted...

Very new to overlanding from the standpoint of having a rig, but a longtime dreamer.
I made my first trip last September, taking a guided trip with Jake Quinones of New Mexico Backroads. That went so well I'm planning to take a second trip with NMBR in June...
Started this build thread after I had become an OB member, and had started making modifications. Ever heard the phrase, buy once cry once? I had but didn't take it to heart. I made a few mistakes, but thankfully, I learn fast.
