Stumbled on this thread and saw that Pike outed me on my initial mistake going with 33s and 4” lift. Lol, yeah that was a doozy of a learning experience.
That setup didn’t last long past my first trip to the mountains in NM. I have a build thread around here somewhere that has all the dirty...
I decided to go with a winch tray on my 2015. With your truck, I would go with a hidden winch mount from Rough Country, and mount it behind the stock bumper.
My reasoning is that we’re already heavy and a big steel bumper is going to add a lot of weight.

In October I completed my second trip with Jake Quinones of New Mexico Backroads. If you're looking for a way to get way out there, he's highly recommended.
Here's a photo of the truck and trailer out in the Gila National Forest.
Next up, will be a custom winch mount behind the stock bumper...
"Yes"
And very much in air quotes... I have an aftermarket diff cover that's a little larger than stock. In some situations it will likely hit the very outside edge of the tire. To compensate, I aired down the spare to 5 psi to make it as soft and squishy as possible. I have air helper springs...
And...it's finished. A custom spare tire winch for my #M1101 off-road trailer lifting and carrying a 160 lb 37" #beadlock #runflat tire.

I was definitely feeling it pushing back, so I just started moving a little faster. I'll turn it down a bit next time [emoji23]

This is the move from the bottom to the top, and then the pause at the top...correct?
I try to remember this but I keep feeling rushed by the wire feeding into the puddle, making it large very fast. I'm wondering if that's just me, or if the settings on the machine are that way on purpose.
I haven't had any issues with them, but I do run adjustable shocks on the rear. When not under load I keep them at 10psi.

That makes perfect sense. I just thought I would go with something simple since I won't use it often. For this application I've been careful to keep the weight bearing portions overlapping other steel, so that my welds aren't holding any weight. Just not ready to put that much trust in myself...
Made a little progress on the spare tire lift. The welds aren't pretty but they should hold.
I'm finding the measurements and angles to be much more difficult than the welding.

Started my first foray into metal fabrication, as I attempt to create a winch equipped spare tire mount for the M1101 trailer. Pray for me, because my practice welds are atrocious!
