Old block, new head dilemma
Most of us are in the same boat as you. Want and need is a struggle. I've put plenty of new/rebuilt heads on good blocks and ran for years, granted with the miles you have I would def say start saving up for a complete overhaul. And hey, the head will already be done! Those 4.0s are tough as...- MS_Disco

Land Rover build
I second everything above, head gaskets and cylinder sleeves are your biggest issues. Although the 4.0s were much less prone than the 4.6. if you live where it's hot, get a low temp thermostat (for hot weather) Overheating these aluminum blocks will cause big headaches. Good luck, let us know... -
battery issues
Correct! I routed the quick connect out the front grill, only takes a second to plug er up, similar to having a block heater plug. OB#3799 -

My disco is a second vehicle as well, I hardwired a trickle charger to mine and keep it plugged in all the time whenever not in use. Best $15 bucks I ever spent. I used to have the same issues after letting it sit all week. OB#3799 -
