Maybe. I have heard some speculation regarding the whys and hows this radio came to be. None of it really fits. Regardless my personal opinion is that Yaesu would have been better off just updating the internals of the 400XDR.
The FT-300DR is a close companion to the FT3DR. However when compared to the FT400XDR I think the FT300DR is overpriced. The display is smaller then the 400XDR and is not touch sensative. However the 300DR is capable to dual digitial RX. It is sort of a weird mismatch and I think if Yaesu...
Ok let me put it another way. How old are those maps? The poles aren't stationary, rather they move and they have been doing so faster in the last few years. Are those maps giving you the right declination? Just 10 years will change that.
True but those trusty old compasses become less accurate the closer one gets to the poles too. I don't care hole old school the tech is they all have their weaknesses. So never rely entirely on one, even if it has been around for hundreds of years.
Necessity is the mother of all invention. When it comes to adding things to your vehicle form should always follow function. So what do you need? That is up to you. Navigation, GPS is great but one could do it with paper maps. Communication, you could go with nothing or you could run a...
I have no idea. I have had mine for a number of years but the copy write dates on mine are quite old. And yeah for that price I'd leave it but it appears they have a couple similar books. Maybe try one of those.
Digital is cool stuff and the truth is for the price difference I wouldn't buy a radio that doesn't offer digital modes these days. But the truth is that for simplex on trail comms digital voice doesn't offer any real advantages. Some other digital modes a different story. But if working...
As the J.W. said it shouldn't be an issue if installed properly. And the key to proper install is prep and attention to detail. There is a lot more to a proper installation then a couple wires. So before you drop your first wire sit down and figure out how you want your installation to go...
What route are you going to be taking coming out of Colorado? There are a couple nice areas in southern Wyoming but it all depends on your route and what you are after. Flamming Gorge and the Red Desert are ripe for exploration. Then a bit further to the east are the Sierra Madras. All have...
Processing wood, like any material, is easier with the proper tools. But when one goes mobile the question becomes how much steel can you carry while staying within weight limits. After all I would love to have my full tool shed with me all the time but that isn't realistic. So my general...
For me it is all about situation. I prefer a hammock setup, they are light effective, and comfortable. But lets face it we don't always have trees to anchor to so I do keep a ground tent and have a travel trailer. In the end it is all about being able to adapt to your environment.
So I was wrong on this account. I could have sworn that I saw it functionality before but now I can't seem to locate it. Let me keep digging.

So this just occurred to me there is a work around. Rather then using real-time GPS data for your position you can manually input your position...
Guys here is some food for thought. We spend plenty of money of our rigs and gear as is so when people complain about spending money on a radio tell them to think about that. It is yet one more piece of kit that expands our capabilities and can act as a safety device. I mean how much money...
Yeah and nah. All kinds of things can happen and being able to communicate no matter the situation is handy and a safety consideration. But we each have to make plans individually.
So just and FYI APRS works over long distances. It isn't uncommon for a transmission to cover half a state after it has made two or three hopes. And it works in any band thus transmission distance is really a mute point. As for getting your entire group set, that is something I'm not...
I get it and understand the many people get into APRS for the ability to track via the internet. But there is so much more to it then that (as you are well aware). And for overlanding the ability to track and communicate with a convoy is something that is very applicable.
