So I'm studying for the Technician and General exams, and reading as much as I can find about different mobile rigs and such. Today I've been researching different antennas and noticed something. I've read (on here I believe) that 2m and 70cm bands are most popular for offroading/overlanding. After reading a little about band plans in a study guide I decided to look it up (Band Plan) and noticed that 420-432 MHz are allocated for "ATV". So my initial thought was I better look for an antenna that's capable of that range.
But many of the antennas of the mounting type (spring base NMO) and length (25-32") that say they have frequency coverage of 2m and 70cm only list 440-450 MHz in the 70cm band.
So now I'm wondering if the ability to communicate on 420-432 even really matters since it's not listed as the standard OB frequency.
For reference, I was looking at a Yaesu ftm-400xdr based on the reviews and comments here. The antenna would need to be at least 22" to get above the vehicle's roof.
