Thinking to myself - why would Paul need to clarify which tz to use?
So looking at a timezone map, northern Idaho on Pacific, southern Idaho on Mountain, and Nevada on Pacific.
How could this be more confusing? According to Nevada Time Zone:
Now I get it - agree let's stay on PDT!
Thank you Dave & Michelle for setting up and leading this trip, good times were had and new friendships made!
...and I hope I didn't wake y'all up as I dashed out early Sunday.
Looks like we all have ham call signs on our OB profiles - Paul are you open to using ham instead of GMRS? I have both licenses and types of radios, but it seems we have to deal with interference on GMRS on every group run that I go on. Not a big deal, just an idea.
I'm running Gaia for maps...
Glad to be joining!
Planning on doing the IDBDR, then get home before the end of the week. Guessing it will take at least one long day to get home from Porthill ID, maybe a day and a half if I take the scenic route.
As for getting to the rally point, planning to head out after work on...
Hi Paul & Crew! Signed up for this trip, should be fun!
I did a small part of it two years ago, specifically the Magruder corridor. Lesson learned from that part - make sure to bring bugspray!
Is anyone else planning to get to Jarbidge on Wednesday afternoon/evening and camp nearby? Would...
If this is the place that I'm thinking of (47.464386, -119.873572) you could come in from the south north side on a nicely graded gravel road to drop off a trailer.
Edit - had my map upside down... please see Dave's correction below.
Welcome to the area, and hope to see you on the trail!
One of my favorite areas in the south end starts at 47.11830, -121.60974, which is a little before you get to Ranger Air Field by Mt Rainier. Nice for a day trip, and you can definitely take a Tundra down here.
My rig is a 4th gen...
A group of us did the WABDR 2 years ago, we started June 15th iirc. We did encounter snow on section 1, made it through but not without a couple of tries for some of us. I probably would have turned around if I was alone.
Our biggest challenge was getting into the woods at Bethel Ridge. We...
What scanner do you use, and do you like it? I've been thinking about getting one since driving into an active forest fire down in central Oregon last summer. Would have picked a different trail if I had known to avoid it.
I drove down to Portland to check out various units at Ham Radio Outlet before deciding on my Kenwood. I was mostly trying to decide between the TM-D710 and the FTM-400, and for me the physical keys and the type of display sold me on the Kenwood.
Your decision might be different, but being...
Not sure if it helps, but just found this map from the backcountry discovery routes site, you can overlay fire incidents on top of the various BDR tracks. It's pretty sad... ArcGIS Web Application
If you want to stay to the north, here's an option that I've been wanting to check out...
Each section of the WABDR should easily fit in a day. My favorites are sections 2, 4 and the southernmost part of 5. Washington Backcountry Discovery Route (WABDR) Map & Information
If you decide on section 2 this time of year I suggest picking the bypass on Bethel ridge unless you have both...
Yes, went there July last year with my son in our 4Runner. Popular place, might be hard to find a spot if you're coming up on a nice Saturday.
Hardest part is probably dealing with oncoming traffic, be prepared to back up a bit when you meet someone coming the opposite way. Other than that...
Nice truck!
Before worrying about the front recovery points, do you have a solid rear recovery point? Sometimes it's more useful to have someone pull me back out of trouble... I have a Shackle Hitch Receiver for just that purpose. That, and it's a cheap way to make my truck look more "expo"...
Agree that GMRS channel numbers can be confusing, I was referencing channel numbers on WIkipedia.
To clarify, 462.55 is where we found ourselves competing with a group using a GMRS repeater.
Sounds like a great trip! Had lots of fun on the one last year, made to all the way to Nighthawk!
A few lessons learned last year:
Trip starts the night before if you're not local/near Stevenson
Might hit snow on the first section, be prepared to pull some rigs back out
Fuel won't be a...
