I looked at treadwrights SUPER hard. Seriously considered them. However, I found some seemingly non-biased reviews on youtube that confirmed your concerns. They're a budget tire, and quality is questionable. That was my conclusion. Look up reviews on youtube, I found those helpful. I won't...
Thanks Kyle and Karl!
I feel like an update is due, since we're sort of already in the middle of some of the upgrades listed above.
Added ditch lights this past weekend. Haven't even seen them on at night yet, because we immediately dropped the rig off at the mechanic to hopefully finally...
Kids just like going fast and big bumps. Literally since the day we brought our daughter home from the hospital, I could get her to stop crying in the car seat by swerving through a turn, or hitting a speed bump hard and fast. It’s sort of funny.
It goes without saying, but I only do this...
This thread is part of the reason I am choosing to install a snorkel this week. Got my lc80 snorkel for $69 in Amazon, just got delivered this afternoon.
I don’t really do water crossings, but there’s always that possibility. Plus San Antonio floods a lot. Plus Texas is dusty.
I feel like...
Most people run the wires up the side of the windshield in that groove under the trim. I’ve even seen where someone spray painted black some of that cord channel you stick on a wall in your house, and stuck it along the edge of the windshield. Sounds janky, but surprisingly clean and simple...
YES! Big Bend is gorgeous. Also love the roads out there. Last time we were there, we were in my mildly lifted tacoma with AT tires (sold now), and it was overkill for that even. Wouldn't take a stock sedan out there or anything with low clearance, and wouldn't do big wheels and skinny tires...
Yes definitely great thread. Its good just to hear what other people are doing, and its awesome to hear when you're not the only one coming up with the solution you happened upon! RTT has been awesome for us, even with the baby.
We're hoping as our daughter gets older we can quickly move...
Yall these suggestions are SUPER helpful.
@Lindenwood I've often wondered this about winches. I like having useful tools, but until your comments today I've never really researched the winching capability of a hilift...now I'm starting to understand why people rave about the...
Thanks! You're pretty much dead on in your assessment...growing interest in wheeling, but NOT planning on breaking things or going through rock gardens.
I have not really wanted to go down the full steel bumpers approach, mainly because of weight and cost. My thought for a winch was going...
I appreciate the feedback, and in theory I agree with you. While shooting the money cannon at our rig would be super fun, we're fresh out of money cannons around here. We DO go on trips, assessing in between, and we have 3 more trips planned for this fall. Also, I would consider the rig...
The trailer route is what we’re planning longer term. Partially for ease of coming and going from a base camp, partially for ease of heading out of town and being able to keep everything pre-packed.
Honestly y’all are convincing me that since we’re choosing only one of the awning options now...
So we have a bit of a problem. Our fam wants/needs some sort of shelter structure. Primarily for shade (because TX is hot and sunny), possibly cooking, and being able to hang out while sheltered from rain and wind. No real need to sleep in this shelter. We have a RTT for that.
So which is...
So glad @Jeepsies started this thread! Really great to hear from y’all with more experience and more mature kids than we have. I’m showing my wife this thread tonight...some really great wisdom here.
Also, it’s just super encouraging to hear from other families who are working to keep their...
I like to clean our rig once a month or so. I alternate detailing the inside and detailing the outside. Which means I end up washing it about once every 8-10 weeks.
But I had crazy amounts of work this summer, so I have washed the rig a whopping 1 time. I really like keeping the rig clean and...
Also i just want to say this thread is great. We tried to research and found very little info out there for camping with infants or toddlers. Good to know there’s some other parents out there trying it out and getting their kiddos started young!
We have an 8 month old. And we actually started prioritizing camping once a month if possible once she was about 4 months old. My wife and I both grew up backpacking and camping, don’t really have the energy to do that as new parents, so now we car camp. Or overland. Or whatever the cool kids...
We have an RTT on our 4runner. And we are considering a trailer seriously. Got a few bigger trips coming up next year, doing them with the current setup, and if we’re still wanting it we’re going to move to a RTT on trailer at that point.
RTT is annoying to mount/dismount. For simplicity and...
Let me preface this by saying I have no experience with the Texas/Mexico border. However, my wife and I live in San Antonio, and she grew up here. Most of our friends have lived here most of their lives. As an outsider, I’ve posed the question “why not go into Mexico” multiple times. All of our...
