It might be ok for a one night stay for us then. Maybe a couple nights if it was just me and I didn't have to listen to the kids whine about being bored and so close to the water but unable to swim.
Understood. Kinda knocks down the fun factor for me then. We're not the fishing types so with swimming eliminated, that's just sitting on sand and drinking beer.
I might be in for a trip to the OBX. Have to see how the schedule works out. What's the weather and water going to be like that time of year? I was in Avon once in early June and it was NOT swimming weather.
Welcome!
Looks like you have a good start for vehicles. I had a 1998 Cherokee and loved it but I had some spare children as well and needed something larger so it was sold off for a 3/4t crew cab pickup.
Post up on the Eastern Virginia meet-up thread. It might get more attention since there's probably people subscribed to it. Also, subscribe to it yourself just in case someone else posts in there. You will get an alert to let you know it's active.
I'm a little too far out for a meet-up down...
The capability of either radio is the same. The power levels may be different and they will have some little nuance things but they will still operate on the same frequency ranges.
I understand not wanting to engage in another hobby.
For me, I got interested in Ham while doing CB installs for...
Not useless, just not useful for what you're hoping to do with them.
As for that radio, depending on the frequency you are trying to use it on there are dozens of licensees needed and many frequencies a civilian can't get a license to use at all (NOAA WX frequencies).
It will work on the Ham...
Your walkie talkie has a wave length of roughly 13 inches. That's an antenna length of about 3 inches. This means an effective antenna is easy to create in the body of the radio and carry around.
The CB has a wave length of about 36 feet! So a 1/4 wave antenna is 9 feet long. Your 3 foot whip...
Ya know why they have a storage building of old stuff to clean out when a ham goes SK? Because it's a learning curve and you'll buy things that don't work for what you're doing but you won't know that till you have them and then you'll say "maybe I can use this later?" Haha!
I have my fair...
I quick glance around your area on repeater book shows only one 2m repeater in your area. I'm not familiar with the area and distances to be able to comment on its coverage or ability to do what you're asking.
There's so much to that question. If you want guaranteed contact EVERYWHERE, then some form of satellite coms device is needed.
I don't know your area well enough to be able to comment on the radio coverage in that area. When I travel somewhere, part of my prep is fresh into the local...
There's still some good deals on Ham Radio Outlet. Check them out! I think the TM-V71A is a pretty good deal. I much prefer the full dual watch dual band.
Don't know if you made any changes or if it's something on my end now that I've been paying closer attention, but it seems to be working ok now. I'll keep watching and update as needed.
Thanks.
To each his own. My wife goes along too but this was a short notice trip with some buddy's and my wife couldn't get the time off work.
And if you feel like you've got your bases covered, then that's wonderful!
As far as "entry", I personally feel it's more a matter of dollars than watts...
Welcome! Looking forward to seeing what you do with your little Rav! It's neat to see what people can and will do with vehicles that don't fit the average. Honestly, something like that would do 90% of what I ACTUALLY do with my Xterra easily.
Check the meet-up section for your local get...
