Also good advice. I was going to order one of the 3 day emergency rations kits and try eating nothing but that for three days just to see how it goes when it doesn't matter :) I had considered MREs and or Mountain House Meals, but wasn't sure how large they are to pack. I'll have to head up...
I forgot to add the First Aid Kit to the list above, although it was in my Master. This covers the Nitrile gloves.
Kindling, headlamp, work gloves, and a waterproof jacket are all things I forgot and will add to my list.
I keep a wool beanie in the truck. I'll add one to the list for the kit...
I want to start by saying I'm not looking for a "Zombie Apocalypse" Get out of dodge bag. More specifically I volunteer with ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) and RACES (Radio Amateur Emergency Service)
Both organizations may deploy me as a communicator to an area that's not home to help...
The radio installation doesn't have to be as overt and obnoxious as I have on the Tacoma. The following are photos of my wife's Elantra (KC9QKY)
Yaesu FT-8800R Control head
Radio Body mounted under the rear deck in the trunk
Light duty magnet mount antenna on the trunk lid
Here are some example mobile transceiver options. Each of these is a dual band radio. (2m and 70cm) Also each of these has a detachable, or detached control head. I'll add a note next to each with additional features.
Kenwood, Icom, and Yaesu are regularly referred to as "The Big Three"...
Could also be an internal conductor has broken free, Whether ground, or the driven element. Toss it in the van, and the next time you're in the Austin area, we'll take a look. Even if the new antenna works better it won't hurt to validate you have a good, or worthless spare :)
I also intend to install a dual battery setup in my rig. In addition to a 130w Solar Panel on the tool box lid with solar charger.
However I do also carry a jump pack. The advantage here is when someone needs help restarting their vehicle, and they're not in a place you can easily pull up...
Three things, If you're in Austin and want me to hook up the MFJ analyzer on both antennas I'd be happy to. I don't have the UHF model, but if it's "good" on VHF, it'll be good on UHF as well. These never fail a little, they always fail catastrophically and Texas sun is murder on the...
This is not exactly overlanding, but if you're in Central Texas, want to meet at least one other Overland Bound forum member, and want to see how your truck will do off road come on out to Hidden Falls Adventure Park on Saturday Jan. 16, and 17.
The club "Heart of Texas Off Road Club" typically...
Did more of my Trail Toys NSA installation today.
Whole lot of spare wire looped next to the battery for now. (6 circuits worth.)
Also temporarily took the 12v fuse from my radios to power the NSA. My circuit breaker should arrive on Wednesday.
Also installed CBI Ditch Light Brackets...
Looks like your fuel tank has taken a hit or two. Any plans to build armor for there as well?
Second look, it appears maybe there's a factory skid there? If so, any plans to bolster the fuel tank skid with something more robust?
I replaced my fog lamps this weekend. I also fixed/improved the wiring for my radios. Finally I built a bracket to hold the TrailToys NSA switch box.
and for the wiring improvements. These 4awg wires and fuses were too long, and just floating in the void behind the factory fuse box...
I've done the run down North Padre Island, which is also a fantastic place to camp. You can do 60 miles on the beach down to the mansfield channel from the Park office at Malaquite Beach.
camping around the 35 mile mark.
The blue sign behind the line of trucks is the 60 mile mark.
I would like to note with regards to CB, that in the United States any radio that does not have an FCC Part-95 certification is not legal to operate on the 11M Citizens Band.
This isn't to say the amateur radio gear isn't capable of following the rules and regs, but in the US Citizens band...
I'm not sure honestly. If we have critical mass with IRLP nodes, I was going to reach out and see if we could have a semi-permanent "Overland Reflector" created. If that happens I'd set up my own IRLP node and leave it on the reflector 24/7
If we don't have critical mass on IRLP, I might look...
