SPOT vs APRS? Why Not Both.

I've been asked by several people what the advantage of APRS is over Spot. The truth is they really fill different roles, with some overlap. This video shows a way to blend the two services together, which is very slick. The gist is an iOS application on a phone or tablet scrapes your...

    Updated 4Runner Build

The cable coming off the light bar is heavily insulated two conductor, in black. It actually fits in the water gutter on the outside edge of the windshield between the glass and A-Pillar. I'm going to put a few pieces of 3m indoor/outdoor heavy duty two sided tape to hold it down. It'll then...

How do you spend your "down" time on the trail?

I tend to set up the bigger HF antenna, and make some contacts.... Example from last March, 60 miles down North Padre Island, near the Mansfield Chanel.

    OB Watches

Man after my own heart... I love the Bond blue Seamaster. I flip back and forth between these two, depending on which is more appropriate.

    Updated 4Runner Build

Here's a little preview. Sorry for how dark it is, I got home from work and the sun was already down. Here the bar is held in place just by closing the doors. I'll install the mounts on Wednesday. Mounts are from Rago Fabrication. Although Cali-Raised re-sells them as well. The mounts...

    Updated 4Runner Build

No changes at all. The lower vent in the 2nd gen doesn't really line up with anything. The upper vent has the transmission fluid cooler (Towing package addition) and the lions share of the radiator behind it.

    Updated 4Runner Build

I fit a 32" light bar in a similar spot on my 2nd gen Tacoma It's now wired to the NSA from Trail Toys. Previously I had a relay under the hood, and had pulled the switch cable through the firewall. Tomorrow I should be receiving the brackets to mount a 42" LED bar across the roof. I'm...

    Quad band/all band mobile

The stuff you do regularly will commit to memory pretty easily. I found the NIFTY manuals to be pretty good overall as quick references.

    Quad band/all band mobile

Success! When we get together for beers/coffee/etc. I'd be happy to help shed light on anything that doesn't make sense on your FT-7800. I've got it's bigger brother the FT-8800r (which was the first radio I purchased when I got licensed in '06)

    Quad band/all band mobile

Sounds like I can raise the 146.820- 88.5 machine from here.

If you're still up, shoot me a repeater frequency, and I'll see if I can hear you.

    Member Rides

I parked next to a friend today. He's not a member yet, but I hope to fix that.

    Stickers

I upgraded my stickers last night after meeting up with BakesFJ.com on the last leg of his month long, 10,000 mile road trip. Also at the Bonfire run last weekend, Saturday night dipped down to 26F, as a result the park (Hidden Falls) gave all the campers a special park sticker.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

I actually just got this cooler tonight so I haven't used it. Price was actually pretty good when compared to a Yeti, or the like. I think the 62qt was $49.95? most the reviews say it'll keep ice solid for a solid 5 days in 90 degrees. I'll let you know how well it fairs when I give it a...
