    Utah Traverse

I agree. I’ve not done the Utah Traverse, but if you take the dirt roads, it can be a 5-day trip in itself. Stay mostly on pavement, with a side trip or two, and you could get across in 2 easy days and have 3 days in Colorado.

Decked for Tacoma, Colorado and other mid-sizes trucks

I found a way to modify the ammo can lids so they can’t be removed by passers by. With the tailgate up, the retaining rod can’t be removed.

What is the last thing you bought and plan to buy?

The last thing I bought - chains for all 4 tires - are the last thing I used. I self-recovered on an icy set of switchbacks in Canyonlands today.

    Recovery Bag Recommendations

I just finished the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands. My tire chains saved the day. I got stuck halfway up the north slope of Murphy Hogback on a sheet of ice. Going forward was impossible, and I had no steering control to back down. So I pulled out my chains, put them on, and self-recovered...

    Solar Power-interesting read

Your idea of just camping until the battery’s dead is a great one, too. Then divide your desired off-grid trip by that number and install that many batteries or be able to charge them that many times.

    Solar Power-interesting read

Thanks for sharing. That put solar in much clearer terms than I’ve ever heard. And it made me think about how much I really need for my overlanding style.

JKUR gear ratio 4.88 or 5.13? Anyone swap to either ratio?

I put 4.88s in my ‘08 JKU Sahara and it made a WORLD of difference! It was my DD, and my mileage didn’t drop at all.

    Escalante/Powell Trip

I wouldn’t bring kayaks. Down around Escalante the Hole In The Rock is a must see, in my opinion. It’s a 50-mile unpaved road out of Escalante to the Colorado River where pioneers in the 1880s built a wagon road down the cliff, and a ferry crossing to settle the San Juan River country.

Decked for Tacoma, Colorado and other mid-sizes trucks

So far, so good! I’ve had them in rain and snow and they’re bone dry.

    Snorkel or Not to Snorkel

Someone said it, sort of, but it's good to remember that a snorkel will only help the engine to breathe. It won't keep you from floating, won't help you retain traction, and won't keep you from sinking. Crossing water is a dangerous thing and can turn expensive or deadly in an instant...

3rd Gen Tacoma with Decked Drawers...

For a couple of years I've been running a truck bed tool box on my 2016 Tacoma. Yesterday I pulled the trigger and installed a set of Decked truck bed drawers, and I am SO happy to have my short bed back! Everything I carried in my box fits in the narrow drawer, leaving the wide drawer free...

Trip to Utah (Moab area) - Trail and Campsite Recomendations Needed FAST

If you're driving south through town, turn right at the McDonalds and keep the cliff/bluffs on your left as you head west and south. Out past the trailhead to Moab Rim Trail are some nice little spots between the road and the Colorado River. I want to say it's called "King's Bottoms...

    Do you pick up Hitchhikers?

When the family is with me, I don't. When I'm alone, I trust my gut. I've met some interesting folks, and I've saved a guy's life. I've had to keep the windows down because they haven't showered in weeks, and I've had some good conversations. I'm just paying it forward. When I was a GI...
