Besides the TIP / Carnet issues, there is armed conflict / civil unrest in Ethiopia at the moment (Northern and Central regions) so I would obviously advise against traveling there.

Diesel quality in Southern Africa is generally okay aside for some rural areas. I have picked up bad diesel in SA, Namibia, Mozambique etc. If you are going to be traveling to remote areas (hopefully you are ;) ) then I would recommend changing fuel filter more regularly than the normal service...
I can't really say that I've experienced a deterioration in ride quality but I would think having chunks out of your tread means reduced surface contact surely.
