I asked AI to photographically represent how the San Miguel County Sheriff feels about overlanders in his county. San Miguel County is where Telluride, CO and Black Bear pass are located.
Holy smokes!
I recently bought a stock double cab first gen Tundra and have been blown away with how smooth it rides, even unloaded. It is comparable to my wife's stock Land Cruiser 200.
I am a big fan of the Quad Lock mount system, especially when coupled with RAM mounts. I've been running a Quad Lock mount with wireless charging on my dual sport motorcycle for 5 years for my phone and have recently moved to their magnetic system for my Land Cruiser. Their system does require...
I just picked up this 2014 Starcraft Comet 12RT pop up camper toy hauler. Due to the rugged nature of this pup I figured I will record my modifications and uses of it here. Although this trailer is not really what I consider an overland trailer, it is close and will complement "Yeller" nicely...
2003 vs 2024.... 21 YEARS!!!!! holy smokes!
Since I am a sucker for progress pics, the next challenge is the same. Lets see more before and after photos of your rigs!
Wow, five years later and my lighting has changed a bit. LED's, HIDS's, Floods/fogs/spots, Oh my! It's still a simple and understated lighting setup compared to most.
The Exped mat in my ARB RTT is wider than the original mattress by a couple of inches. It fits inside the tent without a problem. I like that the Exped mat is shorter than the original mattress since it leaves a place for my shoes inside the tent by the door.
Memory foam works as long as you don't camp when it gets cold. Memory foam gets rock hard when cold creating an uncomfortable sleep and it makes folding the tent up almost impossible.
Several RTT users report success using an Exped Mega Mat air mattress. I have one and it is worlds better than...
I have been pretty happy with a Samsung A7 Lite. It only has 32gb of internal storage, but will accept SD cards. My only complaint about the tablet is it's startup speed, but once it has booted up I can run 2-3 navigation apps concurrently. I only use the tablet for mapping apps and Earthmate...
I saw Bullwinkle and company on a sunrise trip over Tincup Pass in Colorado back in 2018. Spent a few hours observing them from a distance, it was great!
Next challenge: Sunrise or sunset picture from one of your trips. Bonus points if your rig is in the picture.
The most CRITICAL piece of information all new overlandlanders need to know is this: Ignore the YouTube influencer, especially ones with click-bait video titles.
That is an interesting trailer. Do you have any idea what it was used for in it's past life?
Bringing new life into old trailers is great. I am looking forward to watching you build this one up.
In this case, you will be happier if you buy a trailer set up how you like as in scenario 3. Otherwise you will start retrofitting a trailer, run out of time (or get burnt out on the build) and never get the chance to use it.
If you have enough clearance, get a set of 15" steel wheels and tires from an older Jeep (XJ, MJ, YJ, ZJ, TJ) with the 5x4.5 pattern. These should have a hub bore that is big enough to fit around the trailer hub. Aluminum Jeep wheels will generally require a spacer to clear the trailer hub...
I have the smaller OVS 270. My favorite attribute of it is the ability to open the awning and hold it open with one strap without deploying the legs on a non-windy day. This is not really recommended by OVS due to stress on the hinges and the possibility of a rogue wind gust, but it works great...
