I'll add my voice to those saying that your vehicle is fine (with the suspension fixed; you could drive to Argentina and back with no problems (shipping it to get across the Darien of course)). Have fun!
Hmm - initially I had no idea what a "get home bag" meant. Reading the posts I figured out that it's a bag with what you think you need to leave your vehicle and walk out (am I right?).
So, this breaks the first rule of remote travel - NEVER, EVER, leave the vehicle. There was a thread...
I'm guessing you mean narrow canyons(?). Yes that's true, however you'll start somewhere where there is a signal.
To be clear, we don't use the GPS for "turn-by-turn" navigation - simply to know where we are. An example - Misiones Province, Argentina : we know there's a "road" (Ruta 21) which...
If we have cellular coverage and need to connect the laptop we use the hotspot on the phone. If we're out of cellular coverage we are not interested in connecting to the net. I guess this may not help much though. If we ever had to connect for some reason when out of cellular coverage we could...
I find it interesting that there are several references to electronic equipment's failing. While obviously it's necessary to keep items charged, I've never had a problem with this - I tend to be over-careful I suppose but the combination of charging in the vehicle and charging from solar...
1) the one in the iPhone
2) Silva (we always carry a SIlva compass)
3) a watch (with hands, obviously, not digital - you have to know which hemisphere you're in, and it gets tricky near the equator...)
4) a GPS watch (like a Fenix).
re maps - we avoid paper maps - more weight more space. I...
The one we took on our last "big trip" had both - a rectangular perimeter (double - one above the other for an enclosed rack) then a series of lateral support rails , then a 'cross hatch" of both lateral and longitudinal supports. The main structure is 25 mm tubing, and the "crosshatch" is...
Envious....
We're looking at completing vaccinations by October .........................2022!
Local trips around the country still viable though - we've done some trips into the coffee country, high sierras, and páramos so far.
Hoping to be in Argentina, assuming that the quarantine...
So, just to add a few cents:
It's whatever it means to each person - I'm not going to disagree with someone's opinion that it's driving to a campsite and then exploring around it for a few days, for example - each definition is valid.
I guess to try to add something to the thread - I do have...
A very good point.
When we bought the vehicle we used on our first "big trip", on which we drove 49,000 Km in 11 months, we tried various vehicles which looked viable in terms of size and equipment and when we sat in the last one it felt "right" - no further exploration needed.
Maybe I don't understand what "adaptive cruise control" is however when I've rented vehicles which I understand to have had this, I found that it worked fairly well most of the time - when traffic built up and slowed, sometimes to a stop, the system reduced my vehicle's speed progressively...
We have a 35 L (37 quarts in imperial units) Dometic. It's more than big enough. Using it efficiently involves, for example, keeping a couple of beers and a bottle of wine in it, then when we take out the beers or the wine we put in replacements. This works well for us, and we've been able to...
I guess it depends on the routes you take. Crossing the Nullarbor, covering long distances on the Atlantic Coast of Patagonia south of Valdes, or travelling on any other long road with little traffic, having cruise control is far more comfortable than having to maintain your speed "manually" for...
PS - to answer a point in OP’s post, we live in a city (of 9 million) and have a Montero for travel/exploration. Not many problems parking since we walk most of the time and use public transport for longer distances in the city. We hardly ever use our own vehicle in the city.
