Relatively new to adventure travel, but I love it and can’t wait to share it with my kids when they’re older. But I occasionally worry that when that time comes, things will get a bit cramped in the back of my Crew Cab mid-size Colorado. Especially with car seats.
With full-sized trucks getting...
After talking to a few more folks, I think the crawl toy not being the daily is key. I’m not in that stage of life yet, so my truck is my daily and that drives me to be much more cautious. But again, I think Overlanding is much more accessible in that respect. Not that it can’t get dangerous...
Marginally relevant, but a potential tangent:
I consider Overlanding/car camping/whatever you want to call it significantly different than WHEELING. Perhaps this is just from personal experience, but I associate wheeling with technical off roading and rock crawling. That can be an element of...
I agree with this. Part of the beauty of Overlanding (the adventure, not the word) is that it doesn’t require a certain set of things to happen. You just have to have a vehicle, you need to depend on it for food, water, and shelter, and you need to be going into your trip (regardless of...
I appreciate the feedback. It's nice to know that I'm not just being a pansy and a tough weekend wheeling isn't the "norm" for overland adventure travel.
I looked up Canaan Valley Loop on the OB1 app and it shows the trail as a Level 1 in terms of difficulty. I asked my buddy who came with me to...
I just finished up a trip to a Labor Day weekend event at a nearby off-road park, and after some reflection, I've found that there is a significant difference between what a lot of folks mean when they say "off-roading" and "wheeling," and what I have found to enjoy and what I consider to be...
I think that the real challenge for policing overlander (or those who self-identify as overlanders) for destructive behavior is enforcement. At the individual level, all someone would be able to do without risking an violent reaction is raising awareness. If someone is ignorant enough, they will...
See I considered the softopper too! But I wasn't sure how it would be keeping bugs out when sleeping. What's been your experience with sleeping in it? Any mesh mods you've made along the way?
Love the gold striping on your 'Rado, friend!
Finally, my most recent mod is to add shock skids to the rear end. One of GM's major design flaws with this truck was to place the shocks so close to the center of the vehicle, away from the wheels, making them a much higher likelihood of impact than the differential in some cases. I went with...
Last year (2022) I decided to go in the direction of an in-bed tent. It seemed like a versatile compromise between the expensive Rooftop tents, but still elevated above the ground. I took it for my first multi-day trip to Monongahela NF to do Canaan Valley and absolutely loved it!
In 2021, first thing I did was replace the terrible halogen excuses for headlights with LEDs. Later that year, added some better recovery hooks to the from of the rig. Partially for looks...but they really did make hooking up shackles a lot easier than the recessed ones from the factory.
Howdy, ya'll!
Joined OB about a year ago but have owned my ZR2 since 2020. I've since fallen in love with the notion of adventure travel, and experiencing the beauty outside from behind the wheel of this capable rig. But of course, like ALL aut enthusiasts, I have some...additions I'd like to...
Love your content on YouTube! Your video on Canaan Valley Loop really prepped me for my trip out to it last year! I hope to knock out Canyon Rim Rd this year.
Good day, OB community! I just signed up for Chaos Off Road Park's Labor Day Event, and was wondering if anyone in this community was also registered, or would be interested in going? I'm traveling with a buddy from Southern MD, but would love to connect with any OB members that might be there!
I've had a really hard time connecting with the local (MD) community of OB members and I think that having a group like this would help. Would OB members from MD be interested in a Facebook Group? I'm happy to create one, but ideally I'd like to match the moderation/leadership established in...
Are you referencing the "Allegheny Discovery Route" found on the Overland Bound One app? I too am interested in doing that trail sometime, but I believe the app provides a .gpx file for you to use to navigate. If you do decide to run that route, I'd love to hear your review of it! I believe you...
Had an absolute blast on my first overnight trip at Canaan Valley. The ZR2 handled it without a sweat and I really appreciated having my buddy in his 80 Series show me the ropes of camping.
These photos and more will be posted on my IG: @_roads_untraveled_
