External Fuel Tank. Not Rotopax. Just installed the Titan Trail Trekker II

"your fuel tank needs to have a static ground line from tank to a metal grounding rod stuck in the earth while fueling" Most new vehicles have plastic fuel tanks grounded to the chassis. The Titan tank is the same design. Filling the Titan at a gas station is no different than filling the...

    GPS Kevin

I have not done the TAT, but I did the Continental Divide in 2015. GPS Kevin's route for that trail had errors, including going through closed lands. If the "other guy" is Sam, he is the guy that originated the TAT trail. I would not be opposed to compensating him for his effort and knowledge...

In general it is easy to find places to primitive camp in the western states. Public lands such as BLM, National Forest, and National Monuments, allow primitive camping. Just be aware of fire rules and danger in forests. Often you can camp, but they don't allow fires other than stoves. South of...

    Three Generations in Death Valley.

Thank you for the nice trip report. I know it takes effort to write and upload. I enjoy seeing the pictures. Too bad you had a problem with your steering. On the bright side, it gave you an opportunity to exercise your skills. You did well at resolving the problem and continuing your trip. The...

First Mojave Trail trip, need advice.

Most of the trail will be fine. The ground is sandy and water soaks in. Soda Lake can be a problem if muddy. It is silt based, retains the water, and can be thick mud. If you do go across it, stay on the trail as the traffic keeps that ground packed down. People who veer off trail onto the...

I'm glad you didn't have any problems. This person was in similar depth water, got stuck for a few minutes, and then was pulled out. That was enough time for the water to get in. You can see the water streaming out of the door drains. That is one way it gets inside.

Regarding trucks and water crossings just remember, trucks are not boats. They are not built water tight and if you go in deep water it will begin to seep into places it doesn't belong. You may cross deep water and and believe you had no issue, but that is not always true. You just didn't notice...

Here are a few suggestions. In general, look up state parks and county parks along your route, because there are a lot of scenic and historic sites to stop at for a break. AAA (auto club) maps are very good for western states for showing dirt roads as well as the paved roads, and the points of...

    Death Valley

A couple years ago we used Panamint Springs as a base for day trips. You can get some ideas from our routes. The book you ordered should help clarify the details. 1) Panamint, Hunter Mtn., Teakettle, Racetrack, Lippincott Mine, Lippencott grade, Saline Valley, and return. That is a long enough...

Sorry, I misspoke. It is actually the transfer case breather. All of those devices have vents to accommodate changes in elevation and temperature. In operation they warm up and air vents out. When they cool, such as hitting cold water, air is drawn back in. That is why it is important to keep...

Good points. Also good you that extended the breather tubes. I didn't find anything about Tacoma, but I found this about the FJ Cruiser:

That is pretty deep. My Jeep manual says 30 inches max. Once it is up on the doors, it can start to get inside. Even if the door seals hold, there are drains in the bottom of the door which will allow water to start flooding the door cavity. Eventually it will find a place to pour into the...

Water depth varies with season and weather. You will have to look at it and make your own determination. That is part of the adventure. Don't feel pressure to do something risky. You can always backtrack a few miles and exit at Basin Road. Your vehicle manual likely lists the maximum water...

    Overland Alzheimer's: Death Valley

The note on the map about vehicle length is for the paved road. They don't want long motorhomes and trucks on that road due to some twisty sections. You should be fine. If anyone asks, you are about 25', right?

    Death Valley?!

It sounds like you filled your two days already, but here are some things in the same general area. In Goler there are mining ruins, plus the remains of the Manson hideout. Striped Butte and the valley are beautiful in the morning. There are more mine ruins and cabins in Warm Springs Canyon...
