    Overlanding with an EV

That is hilarious! Although I have to concur with dostacos on this. I had a 1.8L VW which was not bad, an audi turbo diesel that was slightly more work, and a gf who requires near constant maintenance. As for the EV, it has been a dream so far. Maybe we are still in the honeymoon phase but we...

    Overlanding with an EV

Indeed the IONIQ 5 comes with free charging for 2 years but then there are some costs. Charging at home costs me about $4 in electricity. Fast chargers on the highway can be as much as $25 if I were to pay for it. I mentioned earlier that there are companies like Jeep and Paired Power that are...

    Overlanding with an EV

On a serious note. Really hope that rivian starts turning some profit while also starting keep prices down. It is hands down my favorite EV. I hope they have some more options in a few years when I’m ready to buy again.

    Overlanding with an EV

Not a bad idea were it not for the fact that the battery on my IONIQ 5 weighs 1,200lbs. I suppose in theory it is possible to quick change a few battery modules but to be honest the car charges so fast it probably would not be worth the trouble. I can wait the 20 minutes needed to charge every...

    Overlanding with an EV

This thread has become quite comical, if not lost the original plot. In the spirit of translating messages in binary code I will also translate my message below using an online jive speak translator for those who may prefer this form of communication. "Hey people. While I have always enjoyed my...

    Overlanding with an EV

In terms of build quality my IONIQ and my neighbors Tesla have been bullet proof after several years and still counting. Indeed it would be nice if the new Rivian and Tesla models came out sooner rather than later. In the meantime, there are a few good options. I don't know about long term...

    Overlanding with an EV

That is true for traditional heating/cooling systems. Heat pumps in EVs are more efficient and average only about 1-2kW depending on ambient temp. Thus there might be a 5-10% loss in range which is why I usually don't notice the difference. Arctic tundra may be a different story...

    Overlanding with an EV

Haha the range on that one is not as good as my IONIQ 5 but there is no heat pump so maintenance is low.

    Overlanding with an EV

I don’t know how much energy the heat pump is actually consuming although I suspect not much in the 50-80 degree ambient temperature since the target is 70. I can say that the interior cabin AC and heat appear to have minimal effect on range. Range does appear to be less in the very cold winter...

    Overlanding with an EV

I am an optimist although you are correct that the IONIQ 5 uses a heat pump to keep the batteries in the optimum efficiency range of around 70 degrees. That being said, a lithium ion battery has a fairly wide working tolerance of around -5 to +140 degrees Fahrenheit. The cooling system does not...

    Overlanding with an EV

Yes I agree 100%. This is why I mentioned earlier that EVs may be a phenomenal solution for certain scenarios eg city driving, county/suburbs, highway driving along corridors with frequent fast charger access, and light overlanding treks under 200 miles. There are literally 100's of DC fast...

    Overlanding with an EV

Some good points although worth noting; electric farm equipment https://www.deere.com/en/our-company/electrification/#:~:text=By%202026%2C%20John%20Deere%20will,20%20models%20of%20construction%20equipment electric mining equipment...

    Overlanding with an EV

Lithium sulfur, ceramic oxygen, solid state, aqueous magnesium and other batteries may not be that far away. To assume that we would not improve on lithium ion would in fact be naive. Only a big oil bot would suggest otherwise. Ha we do agree on one thing. While lithium ion technology has...

    Overlanding with an EV

Some good points but from the data I have read and scoured through, EVs do in fact have a much smaller carbon footprint especially in states where electricity is more green. I am not an EV engineer but I am a professor, teacher and scientist at a major university and I am capable of scrutinizing...

    Overlanding with an EV

This post has gone off the deep end for sure. I’m actually not sure if I am a bot anymore because I was unable to click the “are you a robot” gif. I do stand by the fact that my IONIQ 5 seems to be saving me money and has been maintenance free despite my best effort. Driving 500 miles up the...

    Overlanding with an EV

I agree that time will tell if EV actually saves money or not over 20 years. It’s too early to tell. I can tell you from my own experience that I already saved $2000 worth of gas, two oil changes, and a brake service. Since I use the regen braking a lot the brakes still look new after a couple...

    Overlanding with an EV

I would expect that in 15 years by the time a new battery is needed for the EV it will cost less than what an engine replacement would cost not to mention the 15 years of ICE maintenance and as you say oil changes. Most EV platforms are so simple that they are expected to get 500k or more...

    Overlanding with an EV

Indeed range is still paramount in determining the feasibility of specific applications for any EV. Nonetheless, radio and AC unit don’t effect range very much. Very cold weather a bit. Some added weight is usually not that noticeable hit on range either since EVs are heavy on there own and...

    Overlanding with an EV

I don't get offended easily and can't play victim anyway with an overlander that costs $4 to fuel for a 250 mile trip, goes 0-60 in 4.9 seconds and doesn't break down like my old camaro used to (although maybe because I built it myself). I have rhino skin and enjoy the discussions. Not looking...
