Just wanted to share that a group of friends and I completed a modified version of the Allegheny Discovery Trail earlier this month. We camped at some primitive spots large enough for three rigs and two ground tents, did my first water crossing, and covered Canyon Rim Road and Canaan Valley Loop.
Rigs included my Colorado ZR2 2nd Gen, a Jeep Grand Cherokee that's mostly stock, and an F-150.
- Night 1 we stayed on the south side of the Dry Fork River at a site that was pretty big (probably could've fit 4-5 rigs) and was nestled beside a stream which played a wonderful little soundtrack thru the night and into the morning.
- Canyon Rim Road was a wonderful scenic trail; Olson tower was incredible (I chickened out about halfway up), as was Douglas Falls. Stopped at Big Belly Deli in Davis WV for a sammich and brew before we took on Canaan Valley Loop.
- Canaan was a lot harder than I remember it back in 2022 when I did it last! OnX rates it as a 3/10, but I'd argue it's now a 4 or 5! The trail seems to have degraded a bit such that the rock obstacles were tougher (or maybe I'm just getting soft?), but all of us made it with a few pinstripes and some scuffed skid plates. My buddies were certainly wishing for a little more height at times, but they survived as well.
- We found a camp just before dark on Night 2 along the gravel portion of the trail (we double backed after completing the route), made some chicken stew for dinner and enjoyed the fire.
- Day 3 we packed up, got some breakfast at Milo's Cafe in Davis, WV before hitting the road and returning to the spouses.
Overall this was a great trip, and the route was the perfect length for a long weekend (Fri thru Sun) with time to get home and reset the rig before having to go back to work. I'll be placing landmarks on the OB1 map if they aren't already there and post as many pictures as I have.
My only regret is not filming/photographing more of the adventure, but I was just having too much fun driving!
