I am thinking about buying a 93 Toyota Land Cruiser and would like to connect with someone that could help me out. I don't know much about them and don't want to over pay for something that I think looks really nice. If anyone is interested in helping me out please reach out to me via PM. I live in Winston Salem NC. I don't expect anyone to physically look at the vehicle with me just help me understand the value.

Thanks Jeff

Thanks @Jim SoG

Jeff, answering here for anyone to see. This is a link to a shop that's gotten plenty of my $ (worth it). Their FJ80 and FZJ80 "Newbie Guide" has become a bit of a standard. For me - its about engine size and HP. The FJ80 is 155HP with 220 torque while the FZJ80 is 212 and 275. This means an FZJ80 can turn 35s without re-gearing if you run in "power" mode 100% of the time, which I do.

That 80 seems to be a good rig - with quality components, but i'm not sure whats under the hood.

Thank you Michael. I will take a look at the link. I am not sure what motor is has in it. I was told it has the 4.5 but im not sure if there are multiple different ones or not.

Yes, there is the 1FZ-F (carbureted) has 190 hp and the 1FZ-FE (fuel injected) has 212hp. You would prefer the 1FZ-FE. The others are ok, but a dog with 35s unless re-geared.

Other consideration for an 80, factory lockers or not? Yes = a big win.

Here is a picture of the engine bay. I don't know if that helps. This truck is about 1.5 to 2 hours away and I have not gotten a chance to go look in person. I am still trying to figure out if its really worth it. They are asking $15,000 for it. Says it has 180K miles.

"1993 fj80 landcruiser, full time 4wd, no locker, clean title ready to go, everything works good, ac and heater, Power Windows and lock, ARB front bumper, new tires 35-12.50-R16, led bar, 180k miles, lift kit 2 inch"

Its a lot of money for me and I would have to sell my JK to get this. Im just not sure if I really want to jump right now or wait and find a stock FJ80 later and build it myself.

Thanks for all the help so far.

That looks like the fuel injected 1FZ-FE engine to me (the good one). I paid $13,500 for mine in 2010 (1FZ-FE), locked. They have appreciated since then so it does not seem crazy.

$15k isn't crazy though I am always leery of rigs that are too shiny with bolt on stuff. You can take a really average rig any price it up with traction boards, a bumper and some tires. Look at brands of the after market stuff, signs of some use, etc. Kinda odd all of the lug nuts are painted the same as the wheel but who knows.

Also understand it will be a dog on the highway compared to.... well, most rigs. :tearsofjoy:

Mine isn't a dog (I don't think?). Though it might be by some standards. With a well running 1FZ-FE and 35s I don't feel for lack of power. I get on the freeway fine and 80MPH is no problem. Again, i run it in the power mode 100% of the time - changes the shift points. Now my buddy @socialpants has a Raptor and well - he just leaves me in the dust, but I'm OK. On thing for sure though...if you tow anything - that all changes. 6 MPG and slow to go.

I completely agree. The pictures look really good. When I talked with him it sounded like they almost collected them or something. He mentioned him and his cousin have had a lot of them and he seemed to be very knowledgeable about them. I might go take a look at it this week sometime.

Go look at IH8Mud. That's the link to their 80's section. Go there and look at the FAQ for buying.
Everything you ever wanted to know about Landcruisers and more.
Remember, these are getting up there in age. I'm slowly baselining mine and it's not cheap. This not only includes drive train but weather strips and moldings. Some of the parts are going to be NLA. Look at it carefully. For me, its worth it and I have way more invested in mine than that.

If you post a picture in the mud forum, they will tell you exactly what it is. The air cleaner and air flow meter are the early ones, different from my 96 so it should be an older model.
180k miles if that's correct is nice. The head gasket "normally" goes a bit more but you will see them failing from there to around 250. The biggest reason for the failure (besides age) is over heating due to radiator, fan clutch and stupid hidden hoses. Those should be first priority before you go out. You don't want it to run warm at all.

Short response:

1) We paid USD 19,000 for ours in 2017 - 1997 4.2 turbodiesel with auto transmission, winch, snorkel, roof rack, and a variety of other kit. GOod vehicle, which did what we wanted (45,000 Km around S and E Africa), with relatively few repairs, all of which could be expected for the age and kilometreage.

2) What do you want to do with it?

3) In my view, the more standard it is, the more reliable it will be; in particular if it has been modified in terms of either drive train (gearbox to rubber on the road) or engine (rechipped for example), then beware that it may have been overstressed.
