I'm totally new to overloading. I'm not looking for super hardcore trail rig as I live in north Texas and all the places I want to go are at least a few hours away in New Mexico and Colorado. I started looking at WJs and got a good feel for upgrades and repair cost. I was going through some of the build threads and came across a few Tahoes and burbs. I do have a feeling that a suburban is a tad overkill for me. But the tahoe, I guess I never really thought about it. I am a Chevy guy. My daily is a 06 CC Duramax. Probably more of an ls guy. Ls swap everything right? Lol I guess my question is for a vehicle that will see way more highway miles than offroad, not super technical trails. More about camping away from people. Which is a more viable option? I know its probably more of a personal choice. Both can be had for about the same price around here.

Ok I have 3 rigs and they are a 1994 crew cab flatbed f350 7.3 diesel, 1999 xj 6.5 lift 35" wrangler mt/r tires and a 2004 landrover discovery 4"lift and 2"body lift ( the same tires are on all my vehicles as the xj). I looked at the wj because I was looking at the v8 but finding the 5.9 was almost impossible or the wanted to much for it. I payed 5000.00 for my xj and it already had the lift, front and rear bumper with tire carrier, all I had to do was put in lockers. The reason I personally chose the vehicles I have is they all have solid axles, I am not a fan of IFS. The Tahoe is body is frame where the wj is unibody. After market for both is good but leans more to jeep. The Tahoe will have more space inside. The chose will really come down to what platform you are comfortable with, 2001 was the last year of solid axles in Cherokees and chevy was the late 80's.

The WJ will be the superior offroader. The Tahoe will be the more comfortable cruiser. If you're doing fire roads and forest trails, the Tahoe would probably suffice.

I have a WJ and am really happy with it, but I do offroad it pretty good. Stuff no Tahoe I have seen could even consider.

The Tahoe is bigger so you will be able to load more into it and carry passengers too. The WJ is okay for room but is not nearly as big as the Tahoe on the space.

I have a 07 Tahoe and a 14 Jeep Wrangler JKU. The Tahoe is a great Overlanding rig. Plenty of room inside and out. It has the Rancho Complete Lift System and runs 34” tires ( Going to 35 soon). It has been all over Texas,Colorado,California, Arizona,Utah and New Mexico with no issues.
