This is all great advice! One thing I'd like to add is that you want to be warm at night, but not too warm. If you start to sweat, your sweat will get cold and open you up to hypothermia.

Also, one of the best way I've found to keep warm in my sleeping bags is to sleep almost in the buck. That is, of course, your sleeping bags are rated for the weather. Your body heat should keep you warm. And I found that putting your clothes in the sleeping bag with you is a great way to keep them warm for the morning.
