I'm looking into getting a new off road rig. I'm looking at the 96/97 Land Cruiser and the 91-2001 Jeep Cherokee. What are the pros & cons to each vehicle.

There is a lot of threads and forums about this topic, do really weigh input you would need to provide a lot more info. What is your use case, type of offroad, stock or modified what is important to you. Despite general shape both are vastly different in size, weight and mechanical. I love Land Cruisers but there are cases where the jeep is a 'better' choice depending on the owner/driver.
If you can provide more info on what you want then maybe we can narrow down a conversation.

Personally both are excellent vehicles that have nearly bullet proof motors (of course if taken care of). I'm more of a fan of the LC over the Cherokee but I do have a place for Cherokee's

That is a tough decision - The Jeep is probably the easier one to find and afford. The Toyota is the iconic ultimate Overlanding vehicle. The Jeep is cheaper and easier to repair (engine, transmission & t case replacement) and get parts for, both have plenty of accessories available. Depends on budget and finding the vehicle in the shape that you are ok with at the time of purchase.

Whatever you can afford. Simple as that. Want to stay on the cheap? If you hold out and wait, you'll find either of your choices reasonably priced, you'll just have to be more patient with the Toyota. I've seen pretty nice land cruisers at damn good prices, but not as many as the Cherokee. I wouldn't hesitate to build either.

I'm really wanting it just for overlanding, not for rock crawling. The money really isn't the issue (not that I'm rich). But I do want something I'm really going to enjoy and not regret getting. Something with a lot of power and off road capabilities. So I am persuaded toward the Land Cruiser because of the front & rear lockers, and the size difference. I just wanted to get someone else's opinion and input that own either one.

If you want power then you would have to go with the Jeep Grand Cherokee with solid axles front & rear, V8 power, more room than the Cherokee, more luxurious than the Cherokee and if you get the one with QuadraII you will have front & rear lockers type axles stock. The Toyota only a select few have the front & rear locker option on them, they have more expensive repair parts. A newer Land Cruiser will have a V8 with IFS front axle for a smoother ride. A Discovery will have solid axles and V8 power and is excellent off road.

I don't really care for the Grand Cherokee at all. I'm only wanting a Land Cruiser or a Cherokee. But I do get your point. I found a Land Cruiser with front & rear locking differentials. So I think I'm going to get that one before someone else swoops it up.

The Land Cruiser is also the safer of the 2 vehicles, as the Cherokee did not pass the crash ratings and that was the reason for the Liberty to be born. Good luck with your purchase, we can't wait to see it.

If it was me, I would pick the Land Cruiser. I do like the Jeep Cherokee and its a great looking rig.

That's not the Land Cruiser, but then it also not the Jeep.
Unless he were to get his hands on a LX470, the i6 in the gen he's looking at is/can be pretty stout when needed. But over-all reliability again I would lean toward the LC
