Seems Lucy and I are running out of long trails in the Western US that interest us, so now we are thinking about tackling a dream we have had for the 50 years we have been together.
The goal will be to get there in one piece and then stay off pavement for as much time as possible.

Any guesses what the destination will be for the #OB??26 Expedition?

Whats your dream destination?

Clue

Alaska is on my pending list as well. It is quite the time commitment though. It takes a week of full day driving every day to just get there and then at the end there will be another week to get back. Once you are there the state is twice as large as Texas so lots of miles in between everywhere you want to go. I am thinking that a trip where you don't rush every day and allows time to see what you want to see in the same manner should be at least 2 to 3 months total. This includes parts further north in Western Canada up to Tuk while you're in the general area as well.

We just did Alaska back in July. Phoenix, AZ to Deadhorse on Prudhoe Bay. Then we hit other sites on our way back. We saw what we could in 4 weeks. Over 10k miles.

Have you considered taking the marine highway (ferry) from Washington to Alaska? Either one way or round trip would shorten your drive and you could spend more time in Alaska.

I did look into that and it was always in my plan before I found the cost to be around $3K which is actually a little more than what it is costs to send a vehicle in a container to Europe. When I finally take the trip it will be when I can commit to a lengthier timeframe and at some point I’ll just take a separate Alaska cruise to see the scenes from that point of view.

Put this off until 2027, but its in ink on the calendar.
To much life happening next year ;-)

There's always the Texas Traverse. An easy, but beautiful 1100+ mile trip.

looks like a great easy trip, I wish we had done it when we went to Big Bend.

This year we have, revisiting the Oregon BDR and Expo PNW, Utah, Spring S/E of Reno Nevada for baby horses, and possibly some of the CDT in Canada. Also going to do an RV trip to the South West concentrating on New Mexico.

LOVE New Mexico...definitely in my Top 5 states. We did the Gila NF back in April and enjoyed it. Not sure if you've been there...nice area with a few good sights to see. The Catwalk is a fun hike...its off Hwy 180 before you get to Alma and then east of that is Gila Hot Springs. The springs are a short hike (maybe 2 miles) from the parking area and there are a few hot springs you can sit in like there are at Big Bend. Also the Gila Cliff Dwellings are right up the road from that and is a great hike that actually has you walking thru the cliff dwellings. Very cool experience. We generally stay up north a lot...Red River and Eagle Nest and had a great time boondocking between Taos and Chama off Hwy 64.

If you do end up around the northern Gila area, the Mogollon Mountains start there and if you are heading back west, might want to take the Mogollon Rim thru Arizona...very scenic route. I'm sure you've done that, but its one of those areas Id go thru again regardless.

We have gone through NM many times, two off road on the CDT. I have not spent much time in the Red River or Eagle Nest area so thats our target. I will also look into the Hwy 64 area for boondocking, thanks for that.
Love the Mogollon area, went through there last year on the AZ BDR. I know we will go through Flagstaff to visit the camper company we bought from, got to work that out so we arent there during expo ;-)

Two places come to mind. Alaska and Tierra del Fuego.

Alaska it is but now not to 2027 due to some issues that can’t be changed, but it’s in ink on the calendar

The plan for me is Central Australia this winter (July). My daughter wants to see Ayer's Rock / Uluru. From there, we will likely head further north in the Northern Territory and then return south via Western Queensland.
Update: The Ferry Company had a Sale on, my shipping to mainland Australia is booked. It takes over 11 hours to get from Devonport (Tasmania) to Geelong. It is currently fairly difficult to get a booking for tall overlanding vehicles (over 2.1m/6'11"), until the new ferries go into service, so that is an accomplishment in itself.
