What's your dream overlanding trip? The one that you would take if time and money were no object?

I have one trip that I have wanted to do for several years. And now that I'm unemployed due to the virus and have nothing to do all day long except watch overlanding videos and read blogs, I've been thinking dreaming about it more and more again.

My church has several temples scattered across the Americas, one in Willamette, outside of Chicago, one in Panama, one in Santiago, Chile, and a small one in Colombia. I want to visit each of them.

If I had the money I would take a group of friends and family and drive the entire route from the temple in Chicago all the way down to Santiago, Chile, while vising other church members along the way (and doing some sight seeing and cultural education).

I don't know if I will ever be able to make it happen.

Google says it's, over 8,350 miles, and I would definitely want to add a side trip through the Yucatan, Mexico and probably Bolivia as well. I'm sure it would take 3 or 4 months to complete, and cost at least $100,000 if we had 6 to 8 people and 2 or 3 vehicles. Not sure if I would try to drive all the way back, or ship the vehicles from Buenos Aires to Houston.

What's your dream trip?

I would pick something thru Europe and Russia.
Romania, Turkey, Croatia, Hungary.
And northern Russia, maybe Siberia in the winter.
But Russia would be a huge commitment.

Right now my dream trip is my next one! Lol. Losing my mind in my house hunkering down, but if I really had to choose I am going to Moab after this breaks, so that would be at the top of my list at the moment.

I loaded up the van with all my gear, and after jump-starting the dead battery from it sitting so long, I fired up the GAIA, turned on the HAM & GMRS, and I drove it around the block. Then I put it back in the driveway and unpacked it. It was AWESOME!!! The best trip I've had in a couple of months. Or, at least that's what I keep telling myself :tonguewink:

Actually, once the van is finished and my wife is retired, which was "supposed" to be at the end of this year, we plan to take 2 to 3 months (maybe more) and head north for Alaska. We've both talked about doing the Alaskan Highway, seeing the northern lights, mountain biking, hiking & fishing as we go for quite a few years now, so it's first up on our list. Next would be to take roughly the same amount of time and explore the parts of Baja we haven't been to yet. Then, who knows...

The trip I would love to take is less car oriented but very much in keeping with my core overlanding principles of personal connection and removal from the norm. I would love to travel with my wife through China, Japan, and Thailand to visit our past exchange students and meet their families.

I'm thinking the same as everyone else, anywhere ASAP, but we do have something planned for the end of June. I'm wondering if there will be any limitations when we get back ie; limits on how many can gather? We have close to 20 rigs RSVP'D. Staying home has been rough, but I feel it's the right thing to do.
Take care you all!

I want to get out and run the whole Oklahoma Adventure Trail as soon as I can after the shut down lets up.

As per your question: I think we will see a limited easing of restrictions over time. I work in the entertainment business, as an audio engineer and was on tour in New York when this whole thing started 5 weeks ago now. I think there will be some pretty strict limitations on group gatherings for some time, a year or more. The Mayor of Los Angeles just today said that he expected it would be a year before they would allow permits for concert and sporting events to happen again. I don't know if that will entail group overlanding trips or not. It might be best to keep the trip small for the time being.

Just transplant a diesel in my 80 and ship it, my wife and I to Australia for 6 months. We’d also be booking a cabin on the freighter carrying our 80, so add another 2 months.

Hey, not judging here but I’m hoping for strict limitations on the number of vehicles/people that are allowed to congregate/ caravan together. 20 vehicles? Way too many.!

I’ve criss-crossed most of Southern Africa but I’d still like to do Cape to Cairo (South to North Africa). As a trail run I want to do South Africa to the Serengeti in Tanzania (timed as close as possible to the migration obviously)

I agree but this get together was planned 6 months before the whole thing started. And we were planning on breaking up in smaller groups to do seperate trails not to clog up trails, from that location there are about 8-10 great trail options within a 30 minute drive, everthing from hardcore to mild, to high country passes.

But I think if they allow smaller groups we can break it up into groups of 4-5 and still have the event if that's allowed. There would be plenty of room for separate camps. We wouldn't want to be irresponsible and would follow what ever guidelines put in place. I honestly don't think that much of anything is going to be allowed for quite some time! Just wishful thinking that we can do anything this summer.

For me an Arizona to Alaska trip sounds like a good plan if I want to keep it local...
