Most are, some are not. Once in a while we run into the real deal when we are out, but not very often. Thankfully. A couple of years ago we had a guy on our tour that became visibly angry with me because I had nary a concern about no cell service. This guy had all the high end stuff. His DCtoDC charger failed the first day. His check engine light came on. His fridge freezer froze everything. One problem after another. He had all the gizmology, and was quite frustrated with all of it PRIMARILY BECAUSE HE DIDNT KNOW HOW TO WORK ON IT. The second morning he was packing up and leaving. Complaining to me because I didn’t know where the nearest car wash was. My younger self would have punched him in the face. So ya, cosplayers beware, the overlanding curmudgeon will call you out! LOL

Have only seen the first few minutes of the video but could not agree more; looking forward to watching the rest of the video. Its about the adventure and not the labels or the acquisitions.

EDIT - finished the video and wow! THANK YOU! So much great wisdom in there.

No way man, life is all about acquiring as much stuff as possible. The guy with the most stuff gets to heaven and wins ! Seriously, I was attracted to the S. African dude's way of thinking. It took my wife and I 25 years to get our stuff sorted out. Sticking to the principles of KISS can be a challenge sometimes.

This has been very thought provoking for someone who is less than satisfied with the "American overlanding scene". I keep coming back to how it all started for me - we threw what we had in a vehicle and planned to get to some remote spot and had a great time doing that with what we had. As we repeated the adventure we learned what luxuries would enhance the adventure and what were just distractions. I contrast that today with what I see and the two are not the same. It seems that many start with the "luxuries" and (hopefully) grow into the adventure. Some may claim that I am being a hypocrite because my setup is pretty capable and does have some bells and whistles - but it took decades to build (or at least collect the knowledge) and I can explain how each bit operates and why it has utility based upon past experience.

All of that said I do need to remain mindful that overlanding is an overloaded term and means different things to different people. I am just glad to see that there are still dinosaurs like me kicking around ;)

@Get Out GO - if you ever make it to the states and are nearby I'd love to share a campfire with you.

I haven't watched the video yet but I tell people "you officially become an overlander the moment you realize you have left the term in the dust on some nature forsaken road so long ago you can’t remember the country…let alone the town. It’s just a moniker, one that isn’t important, and one nobody should let get in the way of any personal connection." Please don't misconstrue the country reference in my statement, it doesn't mean you have to be outside of your home country...more about how the term is so unimportant you can't remember exactly when it lost any importance it may have held at some point.

Of course this government network I'm currently on blocks the video so I'll have to try and remember to check it out when I get home. For me Overlanding is getting out there and taking the road less traveled and enjoying nature and the natural surroundings!

Apparently Overlanding is nothing but making YT videos and forum posts about what Overlanding is...

[Overland is taking a cheap super light tool, and making it heavier and more expensive.]

How can I make this cost $100, and be titanium?:
