Hello all - planning a long weekend in the area and looking for advice on trails/camp spots. Have a pretty capable truck, but bringing the lady so don't want anything too hairy, but definitely would like to be off pavement. Been poking around skidmore fork and flagpole but appreciate any and all thoughts / advice. Dispersed camping highly preferred vs. campgrounds if possible. Thanks in advance!

Spruce Knob isn’t that far away, highest elevation in WV. There’s dispersed camping around on the Nat Forest roads. Whitmer Rd in the Potomac Wildlife Mngmt Area and FS 17 in the Little River Wildlife Mngmt Area, to name a couple.
Second Mt is nice, too. It’s on the north side of Rt 33 from Flagpole.

If you’re in the area, stop by Harpers Ferry, WV. Very picturesque and historically significant! I’d you’re so inclined, take the hike up to Maryland Heights for an amazing view of the town and confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. In my opinion, it’s one of the best views in Maryland. As a bonus, there are a pair of peregrine falcons nesting up there, the first in many years. Very cool!
With a national parks access pass (annual/senior/military, etc.), you can park at the railway station in the lower part of town. Be sure to display your pass using a hang tag or on the dash of your vehicle.

With a pass to the park, I would recommend parking at the visitor center and taking the shuttle bus to the old town area. Much easier parking. The train station lot gets filled very quickly.

There isn't a ton of off roading / off pavement in that area, but you will find a few roads and a couple spots in the National Forests. If you stay just north of I-64 on the border of WV/VA, you will find a couple trails. But you won't run out of pretty scenery. Great area.
