I can't speak for all of the BDR, but I did run the bethel ridge section 3 times last year between Memorial day and the end of July. First time snow and mud, second was a lot of mud and third was ruts and a little bit of mud. Once it dries up it is probably doable in the Sprinter but there are some pretty tight spots for a full size rig with a longer wheelbase and low hanging branches. But I think the bigger challenge will be some of the ruts left from people tearing up the muddy spots. While the amount of challenge you're after is your call, you aren't missing much by taking the bypass. Drive to the top of the ridge, get some pictures, take in the views then going around that section on the FS roads. The big plus to taking the forest service roads around that section is it puts you close to Timber Wolf Mountain which is totally worth the detour. In my opinion it has better views then anything on Bethel Ridge.

My days of picking the black diamond lines are long in the past, it's all about the destination/view now (thus the Sprinter). The Timber Wolf detour/FS bypass is exactly my style. Thank you!
