Does anyone know of any reliable sites to inquire about a vin number? I’ve tried several sites and they don’t match the vehicle at all.

I tried the dealership. Only thing they were able to tell me was the engine size which was different then what the used car salesman told me. Trying to find out if it came from the factory with the tow package. It does have the hitch and wiring set up. Also would like to know what trim level it is.

About the mid 90's, when I needed to order something, I had to input the VIN to insure the options were correct for the part. I'm surprised the dealer wasn't able to tell you what package it had. Most of my life was spent working at a dealer. In the beginning you had to find the option sheet in the car. If it was destroyed or just missing, sometimes it took a bit of work to figure out the options. With a towing package, it could have different alternator, gearing, battery, coolers as well as a hitch. As you can see, you didn't guess.

Unless its old or real obscure, you should be able to get the info. I am assuming you went into the parts department.

Edit: If the vin shows a different engine than the car salesman says. I would approach with caution.

Is it possible that someone did a motor swap?

As a general rule the VIN can be used to pull up the entire build sheet for the vehicle. I have gone into the dealership and gotten this printed out for most of my vehicles. I would think an '04 would be well documented, though I will admit I have never done this for a Ford. Maybe Ford is more secretive about their builds?

When I looked the vin number up thru the decoder it was all over the place. Said the trim level was a fx4. It has manual windows. Hoping the parts dept will be able to help me tomorrow. Thank you everyone.
