I’m assuming by ‘roll out’ you mean the usual 6’ square awning that rolls out only on one side of your rig (as opposed to a batwing, 180, or 270 awning style). If that’s correct, I recommend the awnings by ARB because they are simple, quality, and I think fairly priced (starting at $260 CAD). They also have plenty of add-on options available — mosquito rooms, full walled tent-like rooms, or even just a wall kit with a dirt floor.

I don’t think ARB awnings are necessarily MUCH better than their competitors, but roll-out awnings are easy things to damage — a snow load breaking the aluminum tubes, a dog on a leash chasing a squirrel and kinking one of the downward supports, or an attempt to load a box on the roof rack causes you to slice or scratch the cover. To be clear I’m not saying these things are necessarily weak in the ARB — they are pretty stout for $260 bucks. But, things happen and they can break with ANY awning, so the ARB is great because spare parts are readily available from most dealers around the world. Whether you break a pole on a weekend or on a multi-month adventure, you can acquire replacements so your awning isn’t useless weight. Plus, the ARB awning uses pretty standard dimensional aluminum tubing, so even if you can’t get a spare part from an ARB dealer, you can do a bush fix with things like conduit from the nearest hardware store. I’ve been able to easily replace a few different pieces on mine, both with ARB parts and bush-fixes (but we’ve had it for 8 years and about 350,000 kms, winter and summer — it’s been used hard).

All that being said our next awning is likely going to be a 270 degree awning like the Alucab that provides shade/shelter without needing to use the legs to support it. But that’s a whole different price category from the typical roll-outs.

I've been pining after an alu-cab 270 for years now. Haven't been able to pull the trigger. It's a lot of weight on the rack and its pretty long. It would stick out in front of my roof rack. Also the obvious expense. Part of it is how I would mount it. I'd still want to be able to open up my rear upper tailgate and have my rack side lights work.

I did recently see the "Howling moon - 6 Arm 270° SwingAwn" which is much shorter in length but opens up easy. I am not sure it is available in the U.S.

Let us know what you end up getting.

I just picked up a used Arb 2000 for 200. I'm pretty stoked to get it on the rig.

Any recommendations on a fair priced roll out awning for the xterra?
Amazon has a variety of awnings from super cheap ($125) to all the way up the ladder. I think I would rather have a Slumber jack @ $110 as a starter and it dosent require a rack to install. If you have a rack that's great. If your a do it yourselfer there are several YouTube videos on building your own cheaply.

I ahve the ROAM 8'. Excellent quality. They also have an enclosed room available to zip into the canopy as well as a single side wall. Price is slightly better than ARB, but not much.

ive been eyeing an ARB awning. But everyone is out of stock. I shot a message ARB USA to find out it’s likely the end of august before they’re likely to have any to ship.

No employees. They would rather stay home and get an extra $600 a week from uncle. I don't blame them but I sure disagree with it.

I didn’t ask, but I’ve assumed they’re made in Aussie land.
Could be, I don't order anything from Australia for two reasons. First their prices are higher, second the shipping rates are outrageous. Their products are very good but not worth the price difference of American goods. IMO !
Hope you get it soon though.

I haven’t seen a USA made awning. Only Aussie or “pacific rim” as I often see in the marketing department.

It could be over if the rest of the country had shut down to stop the spread. In Canada we are ending the $500 weekly subsidy next month. Why? because we are slowly getting back to work. I had no work for 4 months. NO ONE would rather stay home. After 4 months, getting back to work even where COVID is coming under control is intimidating.

Be critical of the lack of a coordinated response to the pandemic, not those hiding in fear. And VOTE !!!!

Another issue is why would anyone think $600 a week might be a living wage? Likely because they are already living in poverty. Maybe wages need to change for the poorest and taxes need to change for the richest. Make America Great Again..... Look at what wages for the poorest were 60 years ago..... Look at what taxes were for that richest 1% 60 years ago...... When America was truly a great country and education was accessible to all. An educated country is a great country...... Why is the USA suffering? Dig and find out why.

Sorry for derailing the thread but I was only responding to the derailer.

Love the "extra" $600.00 .... :cry::cry::cry:

Since I haven't been in the market for one I really don't know myself where any awnings are made.
I was interested in a Slumber Jack and will probably get one when my health will let me get out. I was going to to use my Scamp for camping in places where I could drag it but I gave it to my daughter who just this week took it to Organ where she lives. Her needs were grester than mine these days.
I have a new t3 Gazelle tent that I will use for future outings (heaven knows where it is made) and haven't yet decided if I want a canopy, a Slumber jack or home made awning that I will rig up cheaply as a day time shade devise. I tend to not want anything that attaches to my rig in case I want to move it for any reason. A canopy fits my picture pretty well but because I am old and cant lift much anymore it would have to be lite and lite usually means flimsy. So I guess I will just have to try something and if it works I'll be happy. If not I'll try something else.
Cheers

I’m looking at one to mount on my teardrop. I’ve done the 10x10 ez up canopy thing, and have grown weary of messing with it. Not to mention the space it takes while traveling.

I definitely disagree on everything you Canadian liberals say and do. You mind your country's business and I'll mind mind. When you start paying taxes in this country and voting then you can have your say. Till then so long !

everything said about the ARB holds true for the Smitttybilt, at a slightly smaller pricepoint.

I assumed the same, till i purchased one. Made in China...

I'm awaiting a Deluxe annex, also none in stock stateside.
Not surprising huh ?

I think I may try the 8' x 8' model canopy. Even a few pounds lighter and a bit smaller would help my back and space allotment for it. I dont have family so I dont need big anymore. I like the idea of having a canopy in front of my tent for socialising and forming an L shape camp and a campfire in the L for wind protection.

Given some of my family lives in the USA, expect me to keep chiming in but feel free to use that ignore button. Hate to say it but this is an International Forum. You might enjoy the KOA Campground Forum more.
