Wow, great ideas. I already got a referral to WamBumpers from another member. Checked them out with my local outfitter and he's going to manage the ordering, delivery and install. Should have within 2-3 weeks.
I love this pic of the fuel can attached underneath. I just bought 2 of those Aully 8 gal tanks. Had planned to secure on roof rack (once reinforced), but now I'm gonna look into this underneath solution. Thanks a ton.

Clever idea, but plastic gas tanks in such vulnerable location would make me nervous.

I've got my spare tank mounted there and it shows a lot of rock rash, stuff that may destroy a plastic tank.

They look pretty tucked up in there, but it wouldn't hurt to think about a little bit of extra protection to mitigate a hard landing, leading to a gas leak and environmental disaster!

just my 2 cents there. Dan.

Yeah, if I were putting a full on aux tank in there I'd def go metal or at least put a skid plate over it. But on the XK that space is cavernous. I think if you managed to hit the tank you would probably break a lot more in the process. Either way, I feel like I really need to utilize all that space for something:

These tanks are supposed to be pretty tough. "SUPER TOUGH ENGINEERING PLASTIC MATERIAL (HDPE) - A one-time injection molding, durable, impact-resistant, compared to traditional iron fuel packs, it have lighter weight and stronger security, seamless barrel body, will not leak. A petrol tank with anti-corrosion, anti-static, anti-ultraviolet function." They advertise they can be used for recovery skids. Maybe I can fashion steel sleeve to secure it.

David, I will definitely let you know. Mine is heavily modified from stock, so I can tell you what worked for me. Have you found jeepcommander.com ? I'm pretty active on there (different user name) but that will give literally TONS of great XK specific info. Pretty much every mod you can possibly think of has been done at least once and every problem has been solved. LOL!!

In Fruita CO now getting ready to do some final provisioning, and then starting out on the Kokopelli to Moab. Then we'll be moving all over SE Utah.
Any reports on your trip and XK modifications? Mine is with the outfitters nows. Getting 4" lift, wheels and 33" tires. Also ordered the WAM bumper per recommendation from Dana. Purchased two 8-gallon Aully Park fuel tanks. My outfitter is going to see if he can build some brackets with a metal skid plate to mount them on the undercarriage.

Would love to see pics of your rig and your adventure on the Kokopelli.
