Our trip to White Rim and Moab area for late April has been canceled. The gov't cancelled our White Rim reservations. Currently in planning stages for a May trip to Tonopah Nevada region. Any suggestions? Mixed experience and lets say 4x4 with mild lift, not everyone with lockers, and a very good spotter. Mengel Pass/Dedekera Canyon in Death Valley capable. Lets say WJ Grand Cherokee with VariLoc rear diff, budget boost, and capable driver is the least capable vehicle. Any ideas for consideration are appreciated.

I have always meant to visit the dunes when I go through there, just north of town, but never do.

There are some neat side trips around there like Rhyolite, the ghost town. Or the old car open air art installation. Cadillac ranch of nevada.

If you're coming up through Beatty, definitely drive out to Rhyolite (it's about 10 minutes from Beatty).
And north of Goldfield is Gemfield.
Depending on how far north you are going, north of Tonopah is Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park. It was closed to camping and the main exhibit was also closed 2 weeks ago due to the virus, but you could still get to the mill and buildings.
All the roads in that area are pretty decent (Gabbs Pole Line road, etc), and there's ton of side roads to explore. Pretty remote area with no services (or cell coverage), so plan accordingly.
On the east side of the range from Icky, is State Route (NF-018), that's a pretty good drive that runs up to Austin.
Or you can take 376 out of Tonopah heady north and not too far is Peavine Creek Campground. I haven't been there in forever, but it's a pretty nice drive. It might be closed to camping though....
376 to 377 will take you up to Manhattan. Cute little place... had a pretty nice little bar when I was there a few years back.
