Recently I helped a friend with some welding to install custom sliders on his moderately lifted 2008 4Runner. Then last week he said he wanted to go to the rubicon to test them out. So I checked the weather, 100% rain/snow till the weekend, then partially cloudy.
Hey looks it's sunny during the weekend! So we set out in the rain Thursday night, pausing in Davis for some dinner and end at a cabin for the night.
Next morning, we load up and head to uncle Tom's cabin bar which is often snowed in...
Very little to no snow to get there. Emboldened by the lack of snow, we head to loon lake to check out the rubicon.
After locking the hubs on my old iron, and shifting into low range (the new car just pushes a button inside the cab) we set out on the trail!
The gatekeeper looked a little icy and with no tracks from other rigs.
And the bowl looked a little snowy and icy!
So we decided that was far enough, parked and just walked with the dogs on the trail for today! [emoji1]
Next day we rolled out to Mormon emigrant trail for some snow wheeling, well it was mostly 2wd all the way to 88, so we stopped by to check out the remnants of the old Iron Mt. ski resort. I actually learned to ski here when it was still open. I'd like to say that it tugged on the feel strings to see it delapitated and vandalized but I really don't have strong memories of the buildings, just skiing in the forest there with my family, so I think the curious longing would be the same of any urban exploration.
Also located the leek spring lookout that I've always wanted to see. I'll have to come back next spring, I want to find all of the connecting back roads I can take to get there. Wrapping up the day at Bones Roadhouse. Over 200 miles of overland exploration, not a bad weekend at all. [emoji106]
