What tires have you tried out on your rig? I have an AWD small SUV and am curious of what tires you all use and what you think about them.

I will be driving in town and off road and will need a tire capable of both with out wearing out too quick. I come from a jeep background so i am not afraid to crawl and get dirty on the trail but never done it with basically a car before.

I've ran a lot of different types of tires on my Jeep - Goodyear GSAs, Goodyear MTRs (twice - as 31s and as 33s), BF Goodrich ATs, and, currently, Hankook Dynapro ATMs.
  • Goodyear GSAs were what they are colloquially known as, "Get Stuck Anywhere". I wouldn't buy them but they're an alright tire to come on a car from the factory.
  • In my opinion, I'll never run mud or rock tires again on my vehicle. They are terrible on ice and in the snow and, since my Jeep is my daily driver, I can't compromise. Additionally, they ride terribly and don't last very long. Mine were toast after 30k miles.
  • The BF Goodrich ATs were a good tire, better than my MTRs but wore out very quickly (mine lasted around 30k miles). For their price and all the rave reviews of them you see online, I wouldn't do it again - they're not worth it. My Dad had a set on his old 3/4 ton Silverado and they wore out quickly on there too. Not sure how they get such a cult following.
  • My current set of tires (Hankook Dynapro ATMs) are my favorite. They are great in the snow and they last forever - I have over 30k miles on mine and they still have tons of life left on them. I expect to have them for at least another 30k miles based upon their wear rate. They're also quieter, ride better, and great off-road (although, admittedly, not quite as good as the MTRs off-road). My biggest mistake was waiting so long to break down and go with a less aggressive looking tire. Turns out these tires actually have more layers and are heavier than my old tires despite not looking as "tough". To top it all off - they were cheaper than the BFG ATs and MTRs. I can't say enough good things about them.

Thank you for such a good break down. I am the guy that reads a clip from a magazine, which im sure pays for the spot, and goes with what tire looks best. I was tired of the 30k wear outs myself.

Yeah, after a couple sets at 30k I was almost deluded to think that's just how long tires lasted. Thankfully, it's not the case and I can stop wasting money on tires every few years!

When I was shopping for tires to throw on my Outback I needed an AT tire that can handle snow in the winter just as well as sand in the summer. I didn’t want an overly aggressive tread that competed with my wife for noise in the cabin but it still had to be capable of whatever conditions I run into off road. Since I own a typically underpowered Subaru one of my concerns was weight (rotational mass). There are a lot of Subaru people who happily run K02s but they’re heavy. I ended up going with Yokohama Geolandar G015s and I’ve happily put 20k on them so far. Surprisingly quiet for an AT tire, well mannered on the road, good in the rain/snow, and they’ve handled everything I’ve thrown at them off road... so far haha.

If you are spending most don’t your time on the street, I really like the Tera grappler G2s. I’ve had them on 2 trucks and a suburban and they were good for 60k. I have Ridge Grapplers on my Jeep but they are still new so I can’t speak to their longevity. I can tell you that they are impressive performers offroad though. Both tires are very quiet and have good manners on the road. I will stick with G2s for my occasionally trail vehicle and ridge grapplers for my primarily trail vehicle.

I have an Outback like WaWa although I am running the BFG AT KO 2's, stock size. I was looking into the Yokohama tire but I have had such good luck with all generations of BFG's since the mid 1980's, I stayed with them and so far love them. I don't think you could go wrong with either tire.

Thanks. I am looking for both. Most of our trips take a long road trip first then end up off rbe beaten path.
