my wife can’t stand for people to be able to see in our vehicle when they pass. It’s like they are invading our privacy when they look at us driving down the road.

But my argument to her is that with so much driving at night we do down backroads it would greatly hinder my ability to see especially out the back or sides when I’m trying to back up or turn around. Plus being able to see as much as possible out the Windows is part of the enjoyablility of the adventure. We can’t always keep our windows rolled down all the time.

What’s your take?

This girl I knew when I was in high school said something I'll never forget: "Tinted windows are for ugly people."

I don't know how that applies to your post, or why I always think of it whenever tinting is mentioned, but maybe telling your wife that will keep her from pressuring you into lowering your visibility.

There's also the legal implications. Some states, especially western states have a limit on the darkness of the tint.

I definitely see a need for tinted windows where I live. It protects the interior from sun damage, and helps keep it a bit cooler in the summer. It can also help deter thieves if they can't see the gear inside. That said, I've also seen the issues you mentioned regarding backing up off road at night. A better backup light helped, for sure, but it wasn't the same as having a clear window. That said, I prefer having tint to not having it, but I don't have limo tint, either.

definitely a plus for being cooler in the summer, somewhat keeps out curious eyes when travelling. front windows are much lighter tint for easier seeing. If I'm seriously backing up on a trail in the daark, I prefer to get out and look anyways.

I have it on my list to get tint, but with as little light blocking as possible. I want it for the UV. The Land Rover factory glass doesn't seem to block much UV on the driver/passenger front windows.

I feel like im getting roasted sometimes. I'll end up with a trucker tan.

I have mine tinted for some of the above reasons, but also because while driving for a couple hours or more on sunny days with the sun beating down on me,I start feeling ill.

It is fairly dark, but it's within legal limits in my state

I have always tinted my windows on all my vehicles. It is not just for the cool factor but for UV protection of the interior, keeps prying eyes from seeing what in the vehicle while its parked somewhere and just stays cooler in the hotter months. I don't have a problem seeing out of them at night but I keep the forward ones a few shades lighter than the ones rearward. All but one of my vehicles has reverse cams...so I don't need to be looking out the window per say when backing up.

I’ve tinted my windows on every vehicle since 99. My Subaru came with 18-20% on all of the back windows and I did the front ones to match. Like anyone I have my reasons (none of which are physical appearance haha) but I have no issues seeing at night or backing up. LED reverse lights certainly help, as does a back up cam.

I tint my windows and I also adhere to "if momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy." Maybe you can compromise and go with a lighter tint. This might also be your excuse to justify buying some light bars if you want them. "Sorry honey, you wanted window tint and now I need all these light bars to see at night. Essentially, I bought the light bars to make you happy. Merry Christmas!"

I had Lasik done a few years ago and it's awesome except for my night vision. I can't see worth crap at night. So, I find myself putting my windows down to see my side view mirrors when I need them to back up at night. Light bars take care of the rest for night driving.

Everyone has said what I was going to add to this discussion. Even down to keeping momma happy! Almost all the new cars, SUVs and the like come with the factory tinted windows. That should tell you something. Benz.

This is the funniest thing I've read in a long time! :smilecat:

Some tint like factory is a nice feature, but going too dark will just cause more problems, especially the front side windows.

I have never tinted my windows because of the problem of visibility on the trail at night. The factory hard top windows tint is fairly dark which sometimes make backing up challenging. For UV protection in the desert heat I religiously use a front window solar shade and try to park with my ass end to toward the sun.

Not to mention that with the giant wiper motor and tiny rear view mirror, rear visibility is next to nothing in a Jeep anyway. Side mirrors are our friends.

I'm thankful my little suv came with factory tinted windows, the only problem is that I want mine even darker.
