I used my no-drill seat bolt mount Ram Mount for the 4Runner this past weekend for the first time. I have a 12.9” iPad on it. Although pricey, I must admit that it worked well and I will be using it for all future trips.

I use Scosche magnetic mounts for my tablet and phone. I like them because they are low profile and are so easy, I sit my phone/tablet in front of it and it's attached or I swipe it off the mount as I am getting out.
My phone is up between the visor and the rear view mirror on a bracket I made that goes between the visor catch and the roof, works well.
I use two for my 10" tablet on another bracket I made on an un-used part of the dash. I live on some rough dirt and even rougher paved roads and have never had either fall off.
I used the universal flush mount but you could also use the one with a base on it for some adjustability. They also have other options.

Flush mount:
With base:
I don't have a pic of my mounts but here is a pic of the set up of the guy I got the idea from.

Just make sure that anyone riding with you knows to loosen the hand wheel if they want to move the screen for viewing. We have RAM mounts in both ambulances, I hate them as I'm the guy who has to fix anything technology-related. I'm fixing the mounts at least once a month because the screws holding the fingers to the base circle have pulled out, bent fingers, missing rubber caps, ... or replacing the unit entirely because it can no longer be fixed. Those tiny screws get stressed BADLY if torqued in any direction other than to rotate in\out. Figured out that people sitting in the passenger seat of the rig were just grabbing the head and twisting it so they could see the screen (we have iPads in both rigs loaded with MEFIRS and IaMR) instead of loosening and rotating. It is a battle I'll never win.

Installed last night, seems super sturdy, read somewhere else that it would bounce around, it does have fasteners to help with that if it does. So far so good. I think I'm in love and saved $70 :tearsofjoy: Time will tell though! Will update after this weekend when I get out to LBL!

Steve,

How does it work with a passenger?

Thanks.

Scott,

I feel your pain. We added iPads to our apparatus and the monkeys kept ripping them out of the mounts. Can't have nice things with firefighters around. We use them for IamR and CAD.

We have the opposite, trying to get the old dogs to embrace new tech. “Hey look this screen thing is telling us exactly where the call is....”

No doubt!

We are trying to limit radio time as the state is starting to bill us, but the old-timers can't give up talking on the radio versus pushing buttons on an iPad.

I also use ram mounts for my Garmin Overlander, it is a heavy duty mount that anchors with a bladder between the passenger front seat and the center console, it is very secure once you have everything tightened up:

I'm fully aware that the inside of truck in these pics is a complete mess that ranges on disgusting.
I like this idea! Where did you get that and is it vehicle or tablet specific? I have a Titan that I want to mount an iPad up front in. I need something like yesterday!! LOL

They're billing you for radio waves?

Been meaning to reply to this but needed to grab a picture! I am running tHe RAM POD HD Universal No-Drill Vehicle Mount with X Grip for 10 inch Tablets for my iPad Air tablet for mapping and have been running the RAM X Grip with Window suction cup for my IPhone. I’ve been pretty happy and agree with the consensus of the group with RAM being the only way to go. I run the universal because it’s removable when not in overlanding mode. I used to have a different tablet mount that was plastic and couldn’t take the bumps and bangs from being off rode. It eventually broke and even super glue and gorilla tape couldn’t save it!

Unfortunately, Yes.

After 9/11 the state built a statewide communications system called WyoLink, using homeland security grant funding. This was great because it fixed interoperability between all first responders, but no one thought ahead on how to maintain the system. Now they decided to bill first responders to utilize the system, by the minute. So, with the iPad in our apparatus we can go in route, arrive on scene, clear scene, and place ourselves in and out of service. This eliminates the need for radio communication and will save our taxpayers money.

James,

How does the mount impact space for a passenger?

Thanks.

Good question! - the other reason why I got the universal mount was for the malleable aluminum rod stand. I can move it around to just the right position so it does not affect a passenger's leg space. Mostly I'm solo though, so in the picture above you see it giving me wider berth to access my Ham. Unfortunately - most use CB on the trails around here so my Ham Mic ends up in the secondary position on the passenger side while the CB Mic sits primary on the driver's side. When not on the trails or with other Hams, the Ham mic is located on the driver's side with the CB stowed. FJC's have limited real estate so I've tried to be created. The FJC Seat has limitations going all the way forward on it's rails with the mount in place but no limitations to backward movement.

Thanks for the pic and how the setup works.

I"ve had my license for 8 years, but never used it. Now I'm finally using it with DMR.
