I recently rediscovered my passion for biking via a mountain bike. Besides needing a way to transport around town, I decided I’d like to take my bike overlanding, which will involve some off-roading and fording. Mounting on the roof of my 5th Gen 4Runner is NOT an option. I am looking for a hitch-mounted rack that will swing out of the way when in camp so I don’t have to remove the bike while working out of the vehicle. I have seen the options from Kuat and the Heavy Duty models listed at 1Up. Anyone have any good suggestions? If possible, I’d like to keep the total transport system under $1k. something that stores relatively easily when not in use is a plus, both on the car and off. I live in an apartment, but do have a small storage closet. Yes, lots of constraints that may not all be satisfied.

Not sure if you have a spare tire mounted on your gate...but if so, Yakima make a sturdy rack that we've been using for a few years that has worked well. Keeps the bikes high and outta harms way.
